HDMI cables

HDMI cables

HDMI cables connect TVs, monitors, projectors, game consoles, laptops and set-top boxes, and suit anyone setting up or upgrading a home cinema, gaming or office screen. Our range of over 140 cables includes LANBERG, UNITEK, SAVIO and Goobay, so you can match the cable to both your screen and your source device.

How to choose an HDMI cable

HDMI version and speed rating. HDMI 2.0 (High Speed) handles 4K at 60 Hz, which covers most TVs, streaming boxes and Blu-ray players. For 4K at 120 Hz on a PS5, an Xbox Series X or a recent graphics card, or for 8K, choose HDMI 2.1 and look for the Ultra High Speed label. An older cable can limit the picture even if the TV supports more.

Length. Short cables of 1 to 3 m carry high-bandwidth signals with the fewest problems. Beyond roughly 5 m, a basic copper cable may drop out at 4K, so for long runs to a ceiling projector or through a wall choose a thicker, well-shielded cable, or an active or optical one.

Connector type. Most devices use full-size HDMI, but some cameras, tablets and compact boards use mini HDMI or micro HDMI. Check the port on the device before ordering. Cables that go from HDMI to DisplayPort or USB-C are different products with their own limits.

Audio and build features. If you send sound from the TV to a soundbar or AV receiver through an ARC or eARC port, use an Ultra High Speed cable for eARC and formats such as Dolby Atmos. Angled connectors and a flexible braided jacket help behind a wall-mounted TV. Gold-plated contacts resist corrosion, but they do not improve the picture.

HDMI cable FAQ

Which HDMI cable do I need for 4K?

For 4K at 60 Hz, an HDMI 2.0 cable rated High Speed is enough. For 4K at 120 Hz, choose an HDMI 2.1 Ultra High Speed cable. The TV and the source device must also support the mode, because the cable cannot add features the ports lack.

Do I need an HDMI 2.1 cable for a PS5 or Xbox Series X?

You need HDMI 2.1 only for 4K at 120 Hz or variable refresh rate, and your TV must have an HDMI 2.1 port as well. For 4K at 60 Hz, an HDMI 2.0 cable works. Consoles usually include a cable, but it is worth replacing if you need a different length.

Does a gold-plated or thicker HDMI cable improve picture quality?

No, a digital HDMI signal either arrives intact or shows faults such as sparkles or dropouts. Thicker shielding and better construction help most on long runs, and the speed rating decides which resolutions the cable supports. Gold plating mainly protects the contacts from corrosion.

How long can an HDMI cable be?

Many passive copper HDMI cables work well up to about 5 m at 4K and can go further at 1080p. For longer distances, an active or optical HDMI cable keeps the signal stable. If the run is under 3 m, a standard certified cable is normally all you need.
