How to choose a car holder
Mounting position. Vent clips are quick to fit and keep the screen at eye level, but they can struggle with heavy devices or weak vent slats. Suction mounts for the windscreen or dashboard hold larger devices, though they need a clean, smooth surface. Screw-fixed or bracket-based mounts give the firmest hold and suit vehicles that are used daily for work.
Universal or model-specific. A universal clamp with adjustable arms fits most phones and survives a phone upgrade. A model-specific holder is shaped to one device, so it sits snugly, keeps the charging port and buttons accessible and rattles less. If you change phones often, go universal. If you keep one device for years, a fitted holder is usually tidier.
Charging. Some holders include a wireless charging pad, which only works if your phone supports Qi charging and the case is not too thick. Others have a powered cradle or a cable connection. If you use navigation for long trips, charging in the holder saves you from trailing cables.
Stability and load. Rough roads, off-road driving and heavy tablets put far more strain on a mount than a short city drive. Ball-and-socket systems with metal arms and a locking clamp are the better choice here, as they allow fine angle adjustment and stay put over bumps.
Device type. Phones, tablets and dedicated sat navs need different clamp sizes and arm strength. Check the maximum width the holder accepts, and remember that a protective case adds to your device's size.

Where is the best place to mount a phone in a car?
The best position is within easy reach and below your line of sight, so that the road stays clear. For most drivers that means a vent mount or a low dashboard mount. Avoid placing a holder in front of airbags or where it blocks your view of the road.
Are universal car holders as secure as model-specific ones?
Model-specific holders generally grip more securely because they match the shape of one device. A good universal holder with a firm clamp and a solid base can still hold a phone steadily on normal roads. Check the clamp range against your phone's width, including its case.
Does a wireless charging car holder work with every phone?
No, only phones that support Qi wireless charging will charge on such a holder. A thick case or a metal plate behind the phone can also block charging. Check your phone's specifications before you buy.
Can I use a car holder for a tablet?
