How to choose a phone or tablet case

Exact model fit. Cut-outs for the camera, buttons and charging port differ between models, even within one brand's line-up. Check the exact model name, not just the screen size, before ordering.

Level of protection. Slim cases guard against scratches and light knocks and add little bulk. Rugged cases with thick corners and layered shells are designed for drops from greater heights, but they make the device noticeably bigger. Pick the one that matches where the device actually gets used: a desk, a pocket or a building site.

Screen protection. A case rarely covers the glass itself, so a separate screen protector is worth considering. Tempered glass feels closest to the original screen and resists scratches well. Plastic film is thinner and more flexible, and it is less likely to interfere with a tight-fitting case.

Charging and accessories. If you use wireless charging or magnetic mounts, look for a case stated as compatible with them, as a thick or poorly designed case can weaken the connection. For tablets, decide whether you need a simple cover, a stand for video calls or a keyboard case for typing.

Material and feel. Silicone gives grip, hard plastic keeps a case slim, leather looks good and ages well, and wood gives a distinctive finish. Transparent cases show off the device's own colour, though some can yellow over time.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a screen protector as well as a case?

Yes, in most cases it is worth having both. A case absorbs knocks to the body and corners of the device, while a screen protector takes the scratches and impact that would otherwise reach the display. Some cases have a raised lip that keeps the screen off the table, but that is not the same as protecting the glass.

How do I know if a case fits my phone?

Match the exact model name and generation, for example the full name printed in the device settings. Cases are moulded to a specific body shape, so a similar screen size is not enough. The product title and compatibility list on each listing show which models it is made for.

What is the difference between tempered glass and film screen protectors?

Tempered glass is a thin, hard sheet that feels like the original screen and resists scratches well. Film is thinner and softer, easier to fit around curved edges and usually less visible. Glass tends to give better protection against impacts, while film is often chosen where a very slim finish matters more.

Will a case stop wireless charging from working?

Most slim cases still allow wireless charging, but very thick cases or ones with metal plates, cards or rings can block or weaken it. Look for a case described as compatible with wireless charging or MagSafe if you rely on either. Removing the case briefly is a simple way to test whether it is the cause of a problem.
