Battery chargers

Battery chargers

Battery chargers for rechargeable AA and AAA cells, lithium-ion cells such as 18650, hobby LiPo packs, lead-acid batteries and industrial applications. The range covers over 300 models, from simple mains chargers to programmable and DIN-rail units. Leading brands include ANSMANN, QOLTEC, VOLTCRAFT, DURACELL and VARTA.

How to choose a battery charger

Battery chemistry. A charger must match the chemistry of the cells you put in it. NiMH and NiCd, lithium-ion, LiPo, LiFePO4 and lead-acid all need different charging profiles, and a wrong profile can damage the cells or create a fire risk. Check the supported types on the product page before anything else.

Slots and channel control. Chargers with independent channels charge each cell on its own and stop when that cell is full. Simpler models charge cells in pairs, which works well only when the cells are the same age and capacity. If you charge mixed or older cells, choose independent slots.

Charging current. Higher current shortens charging time but puts more stress on the cell. For AA and AAA cells, a moderate current is kinder to the batteries. For larger Li-ion cells and hobby packs, look for adjustable current so you can match the cell's recommended rate.

Safety and feedback. Look for overcharge, short-circuit and reverse-polarity protection, plus temperature monitoring. An LCD or per-slot LEDs show the charge state and let you spot a faulty cell. Some chargers also offer discharge or capacity testing, which helps when you are sorting old cells.

Power source and format. Some chargers run from a mains socket, some from USB or a 12 V supply, which suits travel and in-vehicle use. Industrial chargers for lead-acid and lithium batteries are often built for panel or DIN-rail mounting and are sized by output voltage and current.

Battery charger brands we carry

  • ANSMANN: German brand with a large choice of chargers for NiMH cells, from basic 4-slot units to models with individual channel control and capacity testing.
  • VOLTCRAFT: Conrad's own brand, known for programmable chargers and lab-style power equipment for technical users.
  • DURACELL and VARTA: Established battery makers whose chargers are designed for their own rechargeable AA and AAA cells.
  • SKYRC: Specialist in hobby chargers for LiPo and other packs used in radio-controlled models, usually with adjustable current and balancing.
  • MEAN WELL: Known for industrial power supplies, with chargers for lead-acid and lithium batteries in fixed installations.
  • NITECORE: Makes flashlights and chargers for 18650 and 21700 lithium-ion cells.
  • PANASONIC and GP BATTERIES: Both are known for rechargeable NiMH cells, and their chargers are matched to these cells.

Also in our range: QOLTEC, HAMA and 2-POWER.

Battery chargers: frequently asked questions

Can I charge any battery in any charger?

No, a charger only suits the battery chemistries it lists. NiMH, Li-ion, LiPo and lead-acid cells need different voltages and cut-off methods. Standard alkaline batteries are not designed to be recharged, so keep them out of chargers unless the maker states otherwise.

How long does it take to charge AA batteries?

It depends on the cell capacity and the charging current. A basic charger can take around ten hours or more, while a fast charger may take a few hours. Divide the cell capacity by the charging current for a rough estimate, and allow extra time for losses.

Is a smart charger better than a basic one?

A smart charger is usually better for the life of your batteries. It monitors each cell and stops charging at the right moment, and many also show the charge state. A basic charger can be enough for occasional use with matched cells, but it gives you less protection.

Which charger do I need for 18650 cells?

Choose a charger that supports lithium-ion cells and is rated for the 18650 size. Models with independent slots, adjustable current and overcharge protection are the safest option. Check that the charging voltage fits your cells, as most Li-ion cells are charged to 4.2 V.
