How to choose a button cell or photo battery
Size code. Button cells are identified by a code such as CR2032, LR44 or SR626, and the code on your old battery is the one to match. Cells with the same diameter can differ in thickness, so a near match may not sit properly in the holder.
Chemistry. Lithium coin cells (the CR types) give 3 V and suit low-drain devices such as motherboards, key fobs and remote controls. Alkaline cells (LR) and silver oxide cells (SR) give about 1.5 V and are common in watches, calculators and small toys. Do not swap one voltage for another unless the device says it accepts both.
Capacity. Capacity is given in mAh. Within the same size and chemistry, a higher figure usually means longer life, though the real result depends on how much current the device draws.
Rechargeable or single-use. Rechargeable coin cells, such as the LIR2032, have a higher nominal voltage than a CR2032 and only suit devices designed for them. For most watches, sensors and key fobs, a standard single-use cell is the safe choice.
Device-specific batteries. Some products in this category are made for particular devices rather than as universal cells. Check the model or part number of your camera or equipment against the product listing before ordering.

Frequently asked questions about button cell batteries
What does CR2032 mean?
CR2032 is a lithium coin cell: C and R describe the chemistry and round shape, 20 is the diameter in millimetres, and 32 is the thickness in tenths of a millimetre (3.2 mm). It gives 3 V and is one of the most common sizes in motherboards, key fobs and small electronics.
Can I use a CR2025 instead of a CR2032?
Sometimes, but it is not recommended. A CR2025 has the same diameter and voltage but is thinner and has a lower capacity, so it may lose contact in the holder and will run out sooner. Use the size the device manufacturer specifies.
How long does a button cell battery last?
It depends entirely on the device. In low-drain items such as a motherboard clock or a simple watch, a cell can last for years, while devices with backlights or wireless features drain it faster. A higher mAh rating at the same size generally means a longer life.
How do I store and dispose of button cells safely?
Keep them out of reach of children, because a swallowed button cell can cause serious internal injury and needs urgent medical help. Store them in their packaging so they do not touch metal objects. Used cells should go to a battery recycling collection point, not into household waste.
