How to choose a wireless charger
Compatibility. Check that your phone supports Qi wireless charging, which covers most recent iPhone, Samsung Galaxy and Xiaomi models. Newer phones may also support Qi2, which uses magnets to hold the phone in the correct position. An older Qi pad will still charge such a phone, but without the magnetic alignment.
Charging speed. Wireless charging is slower than a good cable, and the wattage on the box is a ceiling, not a promise. A basic 5 W pad is enough for overnight charging, while 10 W to 15 W models suit a daytime top-up. Your phone also limits the speed it will accept, so a faster charger gives no benefit if the handset cannot use it.
Pad, stand or multi-device. A flat pad is the simplest and works well on a bedside table. A stand holds the phone upright, which is handy at a desk for video calls or for using Face ID while it charges. If you also want to charge earbuds or a smartwatch, choose a 2-in-1 or 3-in-1 charger so that one cable serves all your devices.
Power adapter and cable. Many wireless chargers ship without a wall adapter, and a weak adapter will hold back an otherwise capable charger. Look at the product page to see what is included, and check that the adapter meets the wattage the charger asks for.
Cases and placement. Thin cases are fine, but thick, metal or card-holding cases can block charging or cause overheating. If your phone has a magnetic case, make sure it is built for magnetic charging so the coils line up.

Wireless chargers: frequently asked questions
Do wireless chargers work with any phone?
No, the phone must support wireless charging, and most use the Qi standard. Many current iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones and Xiaomi phones do, but some budget models do not. Check your phone's specifications before buying.
Is wireless charging slower than a cable?
Yes, in most cases it is slower, because some energy is lost as heat between the coils. The difference matters less for overnight charging or desk use. If you need the fastest top-up, a wired fast charger is still quicker.
What is the difference between Qi and Qi2?
Qi2 adds a ring of magnets that holds the phone in the right place, which improves alignment and efficiency. Standard Qi relies on you placing the phone accurately. Qi2 chargers generally work with Qi phones, but without the magnetic hold.
Can I charge my phone through a case?
Yes, with most slim plastic, silicone or leather cases. Thick cases, metal plates and cards or rings behind the phone can stop charging or make it warm. If charging stops, remove the case or the accessory and try again.
