How to choose a rugged phone
Protection ratings. Look for IP68 or IP69K for dust and water resistance, and MIL-STD-810H for drop, vibration and temperature testing. IP69K also covers high-pressure, hot water jets, which matters if the phone is regularly washed down on a farm, kitchen or workshop floor.
Battery capacity. Rugged phones usually carry much larger batteries than standard handsets, and many have 5,000 mAh or more. A bigger battery adds weight and thickness, so check whether you need two days away from a charger or just a full working shift.
Screen and controls. Gorilla Glass or similar glass, a bright display and touch that responds with wet fingers or gloves make a real difference outdoors. Physical buttons, such as a programmable side key, are handy when you cannot rely on the touchscreen.
Special features. Some rugged models add a thermal camera, night vision, a loud speaker, NFC or 5G. Pick only what you will use, because these extras raise the size and weight of the phone.
Software and support. Check the Android version and whether the manufacturer promises security updates. A business buying several handsets should also look at whether the model suits mobile device management tools.

Are rugged phones fully waterproof?
Most rugged phones are water resistant to a stated rating, not unlimited. IP68 means the phone is sealed against dust and can be submerged to a depth and time set by the manufacturer. Check the rating in the specifications and keep the port covers closed.
What is the difference between IP68 and IP69K?
