Intercoms and door stations

Intercoms and door stations

This category covers intercoms and door stations: IP and SIP video door phones, indoor monitors and app-connected video doorbells for homes, offices and apartment blocks. Leading names in our range include 2N, Hikvision, Dahua and Honeywell, with Fanvil, EZVIZ and Ajax also well represented.

How to choose an intercom or door station

System type. IP and SIP door stations connect over a network cable and can ring desk phones, PCs and mobile apps, which suits offices and larger buildings. Wi-Fi video doorbells are simpler to set up in a house but depend on a stable wireless signal. Two-wire and analogue systems are mainly relevant when you are replacing an existing installation.

Number of users and entrances. A single front door needs only one station and one indoor unit or app. Apartment blocks and multi-tenant offices need a station with several call buttons or a keypad directory, plus a system that can route calls to many monitors or phones.

Video and audio quality. Check the camera resolution, the viewing angle and whether the camera has night vision or compensation for bright backlight, since entrances are often in shadow or glare. Clear two-way audio with echo cancellation matters just as much as the picture.

Access control. Many door stations include a relay to release an electric lock, and some add a card reader, keypad or fingerprint reader. Confirm that the lock type and its power supply are compatible before ordering.

Power and weather protection. Power over Ethernet (PoE) lets one cable carry both data and power, which reduces installation work. For outdoor use, look for a dust and water protection rating (IP) and an impact rating (IK) if the unit is exposed to vandalism.

Intercoms and door stations: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an intercom and a video doorbell?

A video doorbell is usually a single battery or mains powered unit that sends a video call to your phone over Wi-Fi. An intercom or door station is typically a wired system with a dedicated indoor monitor, handset or SIP phone, and often a lock release. Intercoms are more common in offices and shared buildings, while doorbells suit single homes.

Do I need an IP intercom for an office?

Not strictly, but an IP intercom is usually the easiest option if the office already has a network. It lets reception, desk phones and mobile apps answer the door, and it can often be added to an existing SIP phone system. Analogue systems can work for a very small office with a single entrance.

Can I answer the door from my phone?

Yes, many modern door stations and video doorbells support a mobile app, so you can see and speak to a visitor from anywhere with an internet connection. Check that the model you choose lists app or SIP support. Some systems only work on the local network unless remote access is set up.

What does PoE mean on a door station?

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet, which means the network cable also supplies power to the device. It removes the need for a separate power adapter at the door. You need a PoE switch or injector on the network side to use it.
