How to choose a label printer
Print technology. Direct thermal printers use heat-sensitive labels and need no ribbon, which suits shipping labels and tags with a short life. Thermal transfer printers use a ribbon and produce labels that resist fading, heat and rubbing, so they are the usual choice for asset tags, product labels and anything kept for years.
Volume and build quality. A small desktop printer copes with a few dozen labels a day. If you print hundreds or thousands daily, look at an industrial model with a metal frame and room for larger label rolls. Portable models make sense for labelling in stockrooms, on shop floors or at the point of delivery.
Label width and resolution. Start with the widest label you will print. A 4 inch (about 102 mm) width is the standard for courier shipping labels, while narrower printers are enough for file folders, cables and shelf edges. A resolution of 203 dpi is fine for shipping labels and ordinary barcodes, but 300 dpi or higher gives sharper small text and small barcodes.
Connectivity and software. USB is found on almost every model, Ethernet suits a printer shared by a team, and Wi-Fi or Bluetooth is useful for printing from tablets and phones. Check driver support for your operating system and whether the printer works with your label design or warehouse software. Many industrial users also need support for printer languages such as ZPL.

What is the difference between direct thermal and thermal transfer?
Direct thermal printing darkens heat-sensitive label paper and needs no ribbon. Thermal transfer melts ink from a ribbon onto the label, which lasts longer and resists heat and abrasion. Choose direct thermal for shipping labels, and thermal transfer for labels that must stay readable for a long time.
Do label printers need ink?
Most label printers do not use ink cartridges. Direct thermal models only need compatible label rolls, and thermal transfer models need labels plus a ribbon. Colour label printers are the exception, as they use ink.
Can I print courier shipping labels with a label printer?
