Projectors

Projectors

Projectors for classrooms, meeting rooms, living rooms and venues: business and office models, portable and smart projectors, installation projectors and home cinema projectors. Brands such as Epson, Acer, Optoma and BenQ are joined by screens, mounts, replacement lamps and spare parts.

How to choose a projector

Brightness. Brightness is measured in lumens and decides whether the image stays readable under room lighting. A meeting room with some daylight generally needs a brighter projector than a dark home cinema room. Check whether the figure given is white brightness or colour brightness, as the two can differ noticeably on some technologies.

Resolution. XGA and WXGA are enough for slides and spreadsheets, while Full HD suits video and detailed material. 4K only pays off with a large screen and high-resolution sources such as films or design work. Match the resolution to what you will actually show.

Throw distance. Throw ratio tells you how far the projector must sit from the screen to fill it. Short-throw models give a large image from close range and cast fewer shadows when someone walks in front. Standard models need several metres. For ceiling installations, look at lens shift and zoom, which make positioning easier. Our installation projectors are the place to look for interchangeable lens options.

Light source and running costs. Lamp-based projectors need a new lamp after a few thousand hours of use, so it helps to know the replacement is available. Laser and LED models last much longer and need less maintenance, but usually cost more to buy.

Screen and mounting. A proper screen gives a more even, brighter image than a painted wall. A ceiling or wall mount keeps the projector fixed and aligned, which matters in rooms where it stays in place every day.

  • Optoma: a DLP specialist with home cinema and gaming models, often noted for fast response times.
  • BenQ: known for DLP projectors for home cinema and for business and education use, with a focus on colour accuracy.
  • Sony: makes home cinema and professional projectors using its own SXRD panels, including native 4K models.
  • ViewSonic: a display maker whose projectors are widely used in schools and offices.
  • InFocus: a long-established name in business and classroom projectors.

Projector FAQ

How many lumens do I need for an office projector?

For a meeting room with some ambient light, around 3000 lumens or more is a sensible starting point. A room where blinds can be closed can manage with less. In a dark room used for films, lower brightness is acceptable, and a larger screen calls for more light.

What is the difference between a short-throw and a standard projector?

A short-throw projector produces a large image from a short distance, often just a metre or two from the screen. A standard projector must sit several metres back. Short-throw suits small rooms and presentations where people stand near the screen.

Do I need a projector screen?

A screen is not essential, but it improves the picture. A flat white wall can work for casual use. A dedicated screen gives more even brightness, better contrast and cleaner edges, which is noticeable in business presentations and home cinema setups.

Is a lamp or laser projector better?

It depends on how much the projector will be used. Laser and LED projectors last longer and need little maintenance, so they suit rooms where the projector runs daily. Lamp projectors usually cost less to buy, but the lamp must be replaced from time to time.
