Fixed-mount and presentation scanners

Fixed-mount and presentation scanners

This category contains fixed-mount and presentation barcode scanners for checkouts, self-service kiosks, lockers, production lines and conveyors. You will find hands-free countertop scanners, imaging modules built into machines, and industrial readers that scan items as they pass. Leading brands in our range include Datalogic, Newland, Zebra and Honeywell, with over 130 models in total.

How to choose a fixed-mount or presentation scanner

Scanning technology. A 2D imager reads both linear barcodes and codes such as QR and Data Matrix, and it can usually read codes shown on a phone screen. Older 1D laser models only read linear barcodes, so choose them only when you are sure that nothing else will ever be scanned.

Where it will be used. A presentation scanner sits on a counter and reads whatever is held in front of it, which suits retail tills, pharmacies and ticket checks. A fixed-mount reader is installed in a fixed position, such as a kiosk, a turnstile, a machine or above a conveyor, and scans automatically. Decide on the mounting first, because it determines the shape and size you need.

Reading distance and speed. Scanners built for conveyors need a longer reading range and must read quickly moving labels, while a till scanner only needs to work at short range. Check the depth of field and the smallest barcode size the model can read, especially if your labels are small or printed at low quality.

Connection and compatibility. Most models connect by USB, and many also offer RS-232 for older tills and industrial controllers. Industrial readers may add Ethernet or other fieldbus connections. Check that your system accepts the interface, and whether the scanner needs a separate power supply.

Build and environment. A scanner behind a shop counter does not need the same protection as one in a warehouse, workshop or outdoor kiosk. For dusty, wet or knock-prone places, look for a higher IP rating and a housing designed for industrial use.

Brands we carry

  • Datalogic: the largest brand in this category, known for industrial fixed-mount readers used in logistics and manufacturing, as well as retail presentation scanners.
  • Newland: a manufacturer with a strong focus on barcode engines and scanners for kiosks, vending machines, access control and self-service terminals.
  • Zebra: a major name in enterprise data capture, offering both fixed industrial scanners and presentation scanners for retail and healthcare.
  • Honeywell: known for presentation scanners that grew out of the Metrologic range, widely used on shop counters and in hospitality.
  • Elo Touch Systems, Sunmi, Star Micronics and Ergotron: makers of touchscreen terminals, smart POS devices, receipt printers and mounting stands, so their products here are mostly suited to building a complete till or kiosk.

Also in our range: Qoltec, Custom, Renkforce and Socket Mobile.

Frequently asked questions

What is a presentation scanner?

A presentation scanner is a barcode reader that stands on a counter or hangs on a stand and reads automatically when a product or code is held in front of it. It frees both hands, which speeds up checkouts. Many models can also be lifted out of the stand and used by hand.

What is the difference between a fixed-mount and a handheld scanner?

A fixed-mount scanner stays in one position and scans items that are brought to it, while a handheld scanner is carried to the item. Fixed-mount models suit repetitive scanning at tills, kiosks and production lines. Handheld models are better when items are large, heavy or spread over a wide area.

Do I need a 2D scanner?

In most cases, yes. A 2D scanner reads standard linear barcodes as well as QR codes and Data Matrix codes, including those shown on a phone. A 1D laser scanner is enough only if you scan nothing but printed linear barcodes.

Can a fixed-mount scanner be used with a kiosk or machine?

Yes, many fixed-mount scanners are designed to be built into kiosks, lockers, vending machines and other equipment. Choose a model with an interface your controller supports, usually USB or RS-232, and check the mounting dimensions before buying.
