Wired handheld barcode scanners

Wired handheld barcode scanners

Wired handheld barcode scanners are corded devices that read a barcode when you point them at it and press the trigger, used at shop tills, in warehouses, offices and clinics. Our range of over 130 models includes 1D laser scanners, 1D linear imagers and 2D imagers from Zebra, Datalogic, Honeywell and Newland.

How to choose a wired handheld barcode scanner

Barcode type. A 1D scanner reads traditional linear barcodes, such as the EAN codes on retail products. A 2D imager also reads QR codes and Data Matrix, and can capture barcodes shown on a phone screen, so it is the safer option if you expect codes from tickets, vouchers or loyalty apps.

Connection. Most wired scanners connect over USB and behave like a keyboard, typing the code into whatever field is active. Older tills and industrial systems may need RS-232 or a keyboard wedge interface, so check the port on your computer or terminal and the cable included before ordering.

Build quality and environment. A scanner at a quiet reception desk faces a very different life from one in a warehouse. For busy or industrial use, look for a stated drop rating and dust and water protection (an IP rating). For light office work, a standard model is usually enough.

Scanning distance and speed. Standard-range scanners suit codes held within arm's length, such as at a counter. If you scan labels on shelves or pallets, a long-range model saves walking and reaching. Faster decoding matters mostly where staff scan hundreds of items an hour.

Stand and hands-free use. Some handheld scanners can sit in a stand and scan automatically when an item is passed in front of them. This is handy at a busy till, because the operator keeps both hands free for the goods.

Frequently asked questions about wired barcode scanners

What is the difference between a 1D and a 2D barcode scanner?

A 1D scanner reads only linear barcodes made of vertical lines, while a 2D scanner reads those and also QR codes and Data Matrix codes. If your products carry only standard EAN or UPC labels, a 1D model is enough. Choose 2D if you may need to scan codes from screens, tickets or small component labels.

Why choose a wired scanner instead of a wireless one?

A wired scanner needs no batteries, no charging and no pairing, so it is always ready to use. It also cannot drift out of range or be left off a charging base. This makes it a practical choice for fixed workstations such as tills, goods-in desks and reception counters.

Do I need to install drivers for a USB barcode scanner?

Usually not. Most USB scanners work in keyboard emulation mode, so the computer treats them like a keyboard and the code appears wherever the cursor is. Drivers or configuration are only needed for special modes, such as virtual serial port, or for changing advanced settings.

Can a wired barcode scanner read codes from a phone screen?

Most 2D imagers can read barcodes displayed on a phone, though results depend on the model and the screen brightness. Older 1D laser scanners often struggle with screens. If mobile tickets or digital coupons matter to you, pick a 2D imager.
