Mobile data terminals

Mobile data terminals

Mobile data terminals are handheld computers with a built-in barcode scanner, used for stock counting, picking, deliveries, shelf checks and field service. Our range of over 700 models covers rugged Android handhelds, keypad terminals and touchscreen devices from Zebra, Honeywell, Datalogic and Sunmi, among others.

How to choose a mobile data terminal

Operating system. Most current terminals run Android, which supports modern business apps and mobile device management. Some older warehouse and retail systems still depend on Windows-based software, so confirm what your application supports before you order. It is also worth asking how long the manufacturer provides security updates.

Scan engine. A 1D laser reads only linear barcodes. A 2D imager also reads QR codes and Data Matrix, and copes better with damaged labels or codes shown on a phone screen. Most new deployments use 2D imagers, while extended-range engines help when you scan pallets on high racking.

Durability. Check the IP rating for dust and water resistance and the stated drop height onto concrete. Cold stores, loading docks and outdoor work call for a fully rugged device, while a shop floor or restaurant can often use a lighter model.

Form factor and input. Touchscreen handhelds suit app-based workflows, photo capture and signatures. Keypad models are faster for repeated numeric entry and are easier to use with gloves. Pistol-grip terminals reduce strain if staff scan hundreds of items per shift.

Connectivity and battery. Wi-Fi is enough inside a single building, but drivers and field engineers usually need 4G or 5G. Bluetooth matters if the terminal pairs with a label or receipt printer. Choose a battery rated for a full shift, and consider a swappable battery if the device runs around the clock.

Mobile data terminals FAQ

What is a mobile data terminal?

A mobile data terminal is a handheld computer that combines a barcode scanner, a screen, wireless connectivity and a battery. Workers use it to scan items, look up or update records and send the results to a business system in real time. It replaces paper lists and separate scanners.

How is a mobile data terminal different from a barcode scanner?

A basic barcode scanner only reads codes and passes them to a PC or phone. A mobile data terminal runs its own operating system and applications, so it can process the scan, show instructions and sync data without another device. It costs more, but suits tasks that need more than a single scan.

Should I choose Android or Windows?

Choose Android unless your existing software only runs on Windows. Android devices are more common in new ranges, work with a large number of business apps and are easy to manage in bulk. If you depend on a legacy Windows application, check with your software supplier before switching.

What IP rating do I need for warehouse use?

IP65 is a sensible minimum for most warehouses, as it protects against dust and water jets. IP67 adds protection against short immersion and suits wet or washdown areas. Also check the drop specification, because falls onto concrete are a more common cause of damage than water.
