Scanners

Scanners

Scanners in our range cover barcode scanners, mobile data terminals, document scanners, film and photo scanners and 3D scanners, plus the accessories that go with them. The category suits shops, warehouses, offices and workshops. Leading brands include Zebra, Honeywell, Datalogic and Newland.

How to choose a scanner

Scanner type. Barcode scanners capture product and parcel codes, mobile data terminals combine a scanner with a screen and software, and document scanners turn paper into files. Film and photo scanners digitise negatives and prints, while 3D scanners capture the shape of objects.

1D or 2D reading. A 1D scanner reads traditional linear barcodes, which is enough for many older retail systems. A 2D imager also reads QR codes, Data Matrix and codes shown on a phone screen, so it is the safer choice if your labels or loyalty cards may change.

Connection. Corded USB models are simple and need no charging at a till. Bluetooth and cordless models let staff scan shelves and pallets away from the computer, but they need a battery and a charger or cradle, so check that these are available for the model you pick.

Build quality. Warehouse and delivery work means drops, dust and cold storage, so look for rugged housings and a stated drop and ingress protection rating. For a desk in an office, a standard casing is usually enough.

Accessories and compatibility. Batteries, chargers, cables, power supplies, cases and docking cradles are usually specific to a model or product family. Confirm the exact model before ordering a spare part.

Frequently asked questions about scanners

What is the difference between a 1D and a 2D barcode scanner?

A 1D scanner reads linear barcodes made of vertical lines, while a 2D scanner also reads QR codes, Data Matrix and similar square codes. A 2D imager can usually read codes from a phone screen as well. Most new purchases for shops and warehouses use 2D models because label formats keep changing.

Do I need a mobile data terminal or just a barcode scanner?

A barcode scanner is enough if it connects to a computer or till that already runs your software. A mobile data terminal suits staff who move around, because it scans, shows information and sends data without a separate device. Stocktaking, picking and deliveries are typical uses.

Which scanner should I use to digitise paper documents?

Use a document scanner rather than a barcode scanner. Document scanners are built to feed sheets of paper and produce digital files such as PDFs. Our range also has film and photo scanners for negatives and prints.

Can I connect a barcode scanner to a smartphone or tablet?

Yes, if the scanner supports Bluetooth or has a connector that matches your device. Bluetooth scanners pair with most phones and tablets and act like a keyboard or send data to an app. Check that your app supports the scanner before buying.
