Voice recorders

Voice recorders

Voice recorders in our range include dictation recorders for office work, pocket recorders for lectures and interviews, and AI-assisted recorders that turn speech into text. They suit professionals, students, journalists and anyone who needs to capture meetings or spoken notes. Leading brands are Philips, Olympus, PLAUD and Grundig, with Tascam for more audio-focused recording.

How to choose a voice recorder

Intended use. Dictation recorders have simple slide switches, clear buttons for insert and overwrite, and are built for one speaker close to the microphone. Meeting and interview recorders need microphones that pick up several voices across a table. Recording music or ambient sound is a different job again, and calls for a recorder with higher-quality audio formats.

Microphone and sound quality. Stereo microphones capture a room more naturally than a single mono one, which helps with group conversations and lectures. Compressed formats such as MP3 save space and are fine for speech, while uncompressed WAV keeps full detail and is better if you plan to edit the audio later. A noise-reduction or voice-activated recording setting can help in busy rooms.

Storage and power. Internal memory is enough for many people, but a microSD slot lets you keep recording for longer without deleting files. Check whether the recorder uses a built-in rechargeable battery or replaceable batteries. For a full day of meetings, the stated recording time matters more than standby time.

Transcription and connectivity. Some recorders, such as the PLAUD models, are designed around an app that transcribes and summarises recordings. These features usually depend on an internet connection and may come with usage limits or a subscription, so check the terms before you buy. If you only need to move files to a computer, a USB connection is usually enough. Bluetooth or Wi-Fi saves time when you record often.

Voice recorder FAQ

What is the difference between a dictation recorder and a normal voice recorder?

A dictation recorder is optimised for speaking one-to-one into the microphone and for passing the file to a typist or speech software. It usually has physical controls for starting, pausing, inserting and overwriting. A general voice recorder is more flexible and often has stereo microphones for meetings or lectures.

Which voice recorder is best for lectures and meetings?

A recorder with a stereo microphone and enough storage for several hours is the most practical choice. Place it near the speaker and check the recording level beforehand. If you want the text afterwards, a model with app-based transcription saves a lot of note-taking.

Can a voice recorder convert speech to text?

Yes, some can, but usually through a companion app or software rather than on the device itself. AI recorders such as PLAUD upload recordings for transcription, which typically needs an internet connection. Standard dictation recorders save audio files that you can run through transcription software on a computer.

How long can a voice recorder record?

Recording time depends on memory size, audio format and battery capacity. Compressed formats such as MP3 let you store many hours of speech, while WAV files fill the memory much faster. A model with a microSD slot extends the available recording time.
