Microphones

Microphones

Microphones in our range include table microphones, studio microphones, microphones for digital cameras and game consoles, karaoke microphones and multi-piece microphone sets. They suit streamers, podcasters, musicians, video makers and home office users. Brands include BOYA, RØDE, Shure and Elgato.

How to choose a microphone

Where you will use it. A table microphone sits on a desk for calls, podcasts and streaming, while a studio microphone is built for recording vocals and instruments in a quiet room. Camera microphones mount on the camera and capture sound from the scene in front of you, and karaoke microphones are made for singing through a speaker or amplifier.

Connection. USB microphones plug straight into a computer and need no extra equipment, which makes them the easiest start for streaming and calls. Microphones with an XLR output need an audio interface or mixer but give you room to upgrade later. Camera models usually connect with a 3.5 mm plug, so check that your camera has a microphone input.

Microphone type and pickup pattern. Condenser microphones pick up fine detail and suit quiet rooms, whereas dynamic microphones tolerate noise and loud sources better and are common on stage. A cardioid pattern records mainly what is in front of the microphone, which helps if you record in a room with background noise.

Compatibility. Game console microphones are made to work with consoles and often attach to a controller or headset. If you plan to record on a phone, tablet or laptop, confirm the plug or adapter that device needs before you order.

Accessories. A stand or boom arm, a pop filter and a windscreen make a noticeable difference to recordings. Microphone sets in our range usually bundle some of these extras, so compare what is included.

Microphone FAQ

Which microphone is best for streaming or podcasting?

A USB table microphone with a cardioid pickup pattern is the simplest choice for streaming or podcasting. It connects directly to your computer and focuses on your voice rather than the room. Add a pop filter and a stand or boom arm for cleaner recordings.

Should I buy a USB or an XLR microphone?

Buy a USB microphone if you want a simple setup with one cable to your computer. Choose XLR if you plan to build a larger audio setup with an interface or mixer, since you can upgrade each part separately. XLR microphones cannot be plugged into a computer without that extra equipment.

What is the difference between dynamic and condenser microphones?

Dynamic microphones are sturdier and pick up less background noise, which suits live use and untreated rooms. Condenser microphones are more sensitive and capture more detail, so they work best in quiet spaces for vocals and acoustic instruments. Most condenser models also need power from a USB port, an interface or a mixer.

Can I use a camera microphone with my phone?

Sometimes, but not always. Most camera microphones use a 3.5 mm plug, and many phones need an adapter to accept it, as well as a plug wired for phone use. Check the connector type and compatibility before buying.
