How to choose a motorcycle intercom
Group size and connection type. A standard Bluetooth intercom suits a rider and passenger or two bikes, and some units link several riders in a chain. Mesh systems handle larger groups and let riders leave and rejoin without re-pairing, which matters on organised tours.
Real-world range. Quoted distances are normally measured on open, flat ground. Traffic noise, hills and buildings shorten them, so treat the figure as a ceiling. In a mesh network, each rider also acts as a relay, so range depends on how many bikes are in the group.
Helmet fit and mounting. Most units attach with a clamp or adhesive plate on the side of the helmet, with thin speakers placed in the ear pockets. Check that your full-face, modular or open-face helmet has room for the speakers and a suitable microphone position. Some systems are made for specific helmet brands.
Battery, charging and weather protection. Look for enough talk time to cover your longest day in the saddle, USB charging and a stated water-resistance rating. Large buttons or a jog dial are easier to use with winter gloves than small touch controls.
Audio features and compatibility. Check that the unit pairs with your phone and sat nav, streams music and supports voice assistants. Intercoms from different brands do not always talk to each other, so riders who want to ride together are best off choosing the same system or confirming universal pairing first.
