Headphones

Headphones in our range include wireless and wired over-ear models, true wireless earbuds, gaming headsets and office headsets, for home listeners, gamers and call centre teams. Leading brands include Jabra, HP Poly, JBL, Logitech and Sony. The category also holds accessories such as replacement ear tips, plus a few related items such as microphones.

How to choose headphones

Connection type. Our range includes wired, wireless, true wireless stereo (TWS) and models that can be used either way. Wired headphones need no charging and add no noticeable delay, which suits desk work and critical listening. Wireless models free you from the cable, and dual-mode headsets are handy if you move between a laptop and a phone.

Main use. Decide first whether the headphones are for music, calls or gaming. Office and call centre headsets put the microphone first and are built for a full day of talking. Gaming headsets add a boom microphone and often surround sound, while studio headphones are tuned for accurate monitoring rather than bass.

Comfort and fit. Over-ear headphones spread the weight around the ear and stay comfortable over long sessions. Earbuds are lighter and fit in a pocket, but the seal depends on the ear tip size, so foam or silicone replacements can make a real difference. If you wear glasses, check that the ear cups are soft and not too tight.

Noise cancelling and microphone quality. Active noise cancelling reduces constant sounds such as aircraft, traffic or air conditioning. For open-plan offices, a microphone with noise reduction matters just as much, because it limits what your colleagues and callers hear from your side.

Compatibility and battery. Business headsets are usually offered in USB or wireless dongle versions, and some are made for specific desk phones or meeting software, so check this before buying. For wireless models, compare battery life with your typical day, since a headset used for calls may need to last a full shift.

Headphones FAQ

Are wireless or wired headphones better?

Neither is better in every situation. Wired headphones need no charging and have no connection delay, so they suit desks, studios and competitive gaming. Wireless headphones are more convenient for commuting, exercise and moving around the house.

What does true wireless mean?

True wireless earbuds are two separate earpieces with no cable between them or to your phone. Each bud has its own battery, and the charging case tops them up when you are not using them. The abbreviation TWS stands for true wireless stereo.

Which headset is best for office calls?

Look for an office or call centre headset with a noise-reducing microphone and a connection that suits your equipment, usually USB or a wireless dongle. Single-ear models let you hear the room around you, while double-ear models block more background noise. Check that the headset works with your meeting software or desk phone.

Do I need noise-cancelling headphones?

Noise cancelling is worth having if you often listen in loud places such as trains, aircraft or open-plan offices. It reduces steady, low sounds more than sudden noises like voices. If you mainly listen in a quiet room, a comfortable pair without it will often serve you just as well.
