KVM switches

KVM switches

KVM switches let one keyboard, monitor and mouse control several computers or servers. Our range of over 700 models covers desktop switches, rack-mount consoles and IP-based units for home offices, workshops and server rooms. Leading brands include ATEN, StarTech.com, DIGITUS and LINDY.

How to choose a KVM switch

Number of computers. Count the machines you need to control now and add a spare port or two. Desktop models usually start at two ports, while rack units can handle eight, sixteen or more servers from a single console.

Video connection and resolution. The switch must match your graphics outputs, whether HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI or VGA. If you work with a 4K monitor or a high refresh rate, check that the switch lists that exact resolution, because older models may drop to a lower one. Dual-monitor switches are a separate type and cost more than single-display ones.

Local switch or KVM over IP. A standard KVM switch connects by cable and works only at the desk or rack. KVM over IP sends the console across a network, so you can reach servers remotely, which matters for data centres and server rooms with no one on site.

USB peripherals and switching method. Look for extra USB ports if you want to share a printer, webcam or storage drive, and for audio pass-through if you need speakers or a headset. Switching by front-panel button, hotkey or remote control is a matter of habit, but hotkeys are handy when the unit sits out of reach.

Operating environment. Many units in our range are rated for 0 to 40 °C or 0 to 50 °C in operation, and some for up to 60 °C. For a warm cabinet or an unventilated rack, choose a higher rating. Storage ratings of -20 to 60 °C are the most common among the products we list, and a few extend to -40 to 75 °C.

KVM switch FAQ

What does a KVM switch do?

A KVM switch lets you operate several computers with one keyboard, one mouse and one monitor. You press a button or hotkey to change which computer is active. This saves desk space and removes the need for duplicate peripherals.

Does a KVM switch reduce picture quality?

A good KVM switch does not noticeably reduce picture quality, provided it supports your monitor's resolution and refresh rate. Problems usually come from an older model, a long or low-grade cable or a mismatched video standard. Check the maximum resolution on the specification list before buying.

What is the difference between a KVM switch and KVM over IP?

A KVM switch connects computers to a console by cable, so you must be physically at the desk or rack. KVM over IP carries the keyboard, video and mouse signals across a network, so you can control a server from another room or building. It also suits servers that need access even when the operating system is not running.

Can I use two monitors with a KVM switch?

Yes, but you need a dual-monitor KVM switch that has two video outputs and two inputs for each computer. A single-display model will show only one screen. Check that the video ports and resolution match your monitors and graphics outputs.
