Microphone accessories

Microphone accessories are the add-ons that sit around a microphone: boom arms, stands, shock mounts, pop filters, windshields and similar parts. The range suits streamers, podcasters, home-studio users and anyone who wants cleaner sound from the microphone they already own. Brands include Sennheiser, Logitech, Endorfy, Elgato and Neumann.

How to choose microphone accessories

Compatibility. Check that the part is made for your microphone or uses a standard fitting. Many stands and mounts use a 3/8 inch or 5/8 inch thread, while clips, capsules and windshields are often designed for specific models. When you buy a part from the same maker as your microphone, the fit is usually easier to confirm.

Problem you want to solve. Pop filters and windshields reduce plosive sounds such as P and B, and breath noise. Shock mounts and boom arms deal with desk vibration and keyboard thumps. Decide which of these you hear in your recordings before choosing.

Where you will use it. A foam windshield or fur cover helps outdoors and on location, where wind is the main enemy. At a desk, a pop filter or boom arm usually makes a bigger difference. Fixed stands take up less room, while an adjustable arm lets you move the microphone away from the screen when you are not recording.

Connection and cables. Studio microphones normally use XLR cables, while many streaming microphones connect over USB. Match the cable type, length and connector to your microphone and audio interface. A cable that is too short limits where you can place the microphone.

Build and stability. A metal arm joint or a weighted base keeps the microphone where you put it. Heavier studio microphones need a sturdier mount than a lightweight USB model, so check the load the product is designed to carry.

Microphone accessories FAQ

Do I need a pop filter for my microphone?

A pop filter is worth having if you record speech or vocals close to the microphone. It breaks up the burst of air from plosive sounds before it hits the capsule. Without one, you may hear thumps on P and B sounds that are hard to remove later.

What is the difference between a pop filter and a windshield?

A pop filter is a screen that sits a short distance in front of the microphone, mainly for indoor voice recording. A windshield is a foam or fur cover that fits over the microphone itself and is used mostly outdoors or on location. Both reduce air noise, but they suit different situations.

What does a shock mount do?

A shock mount holds the microphone in elastic suspension so vibrations from the desk or stand do not reach it. This reduces rumble from knocks, footsteps and typing. It is especially useful with sensitive condenser microphones.

Will accessories from one brand fit another brand's microphone?

Sometimes, but not always. Stands, boom arms and many clips use standard threads, so they often fit across brands. Model-specific parts such as capsules, windshields and shock mounts should be checked against your exact microphone before you buy.
