Microphones

Microphones

Microphones for streaming, podcasting, singing, presenting and video work, from USB desk models to wireless systems and stage microphones. The range of over 400 models includes RØDE, Sennheiser, Shure and Logitech, plus conference and karaoke microphones for meeting rooms and home use.

How to choose a microphone

Connection. USB microphones plug straight into a PC or Mac and need no extra equipment, which suits streaming, calls and podcasts. XLR microphones need an audio interface or mixer, but they are the standard in studios and on stage and let you upgrade parts of your setup one at a time. Wireless systems remove the cable for presenting, teaching and filming.

Dynamic or condenser. Dynamic microphones cope with loud sources and pick up less room noise, so they work well for live vocals, instruments and untreated rooms. Condenser microphones capture more detail and are the usual choice for studio vocals and voice-over in a quiet space. They need power, either phantom power on XLR models or the USB connection.

Pickup pattern. A cardioid pattern records what is in front of the microphone and rejects sound from behind, which suits most single-voice uses. Omnidirectional patterns are better for a conference table, and some USB models add stereo or bidirectional modes for interviews and duets.

Where you will use it. Lavalier and camera microphones keep the sound close to the speaker while filming. Conference microphones cover a whole meeting room, and headsets combine microphone and earphones for gaming and calls. Stands, shock mounts, pop filters and cables are often sold separately, so check what is included.

Microphone FAQ

Is a USB or XLR microphone better?

A USB microphone is better if you want a simple setup for streaming, calls or podcasts, because it connects directly to a computer. An XLR microphone is better if you plan to build a studio or play live, since it works with mixers and audio interfaces and gives you more room to upgrade. Many creators start with USB and move to XLR later.

What is the difference between dynamic and condenser microphones?

Dynamic microphones are sturdier and pick up less background noise, while condenser microphones are more sensitive and record finer detail. Dynamic models suit loud sources and noisy rooms. Condenser models do their best work in a quiet, treated space.

Which microphone should I choose for streaming or podcasting?

A USB microphone with a cardioid pattern is the simplest choice for streaming or podcasting, as it focuses on your voice and needs no extra hardware. If your room is noisy, a dynamic model helps reduce keyboard and background sounds. Adding a pop filter and a boom arm or stand improves clarity further.

What microphone works best for filming with a camera or phone?

A lavalier or on-camera shotgun microphone works best, because it sits closer to the speaker than the built-in microphone. Lavalier models clip to clothing and suit interviews and presentations. Wireless systems let the speaker move freely without a cable running to the camera.
