HDMI signal accessories are devices that split, extend, switch or boost an HDMI video signal, for anyone running several screens, long cable routes or one source shared between displays. Typical products are splitters, extenders and signal boosters, with brands in our range including StarTech.com, Lindy and Vivolink.
How to choose HDMI signal accessories
Function. Decide what problem you are solving first. A splitter sends one source to several screens, a switch lets several sources share one screen, and an extender or booster restores a signal that weakens over distance. Buying the wrong type is the most common mistake in this category.
Resolution and refresh rate. Check that the device supports the picture you actually use, such as 1080p, 4K at 30 Hz or 4K at 60 Hz. Older accessories may pass a Full HD picture without trouble but limit a 4K signal, so look at the stated maximum resolution rather than assuming HDMI means 4K.
Distance and transmission method. Standard HDMI cables begin to lose signal quality over longer runs, particularly at 4K. Boosters add a few metres, while extenders that send video over network cable or fibre are generally used for much longer distances, such as across a meeting room or a building. Note the maximum length the manufacturer quotes at your resolution.
Compatibility and power. Look for HDCP support if you plan to use streaming boxes, Blu-ray players or set-top boxes, as protected content may not display without it. Many splitters, extenders and active boosters need a separate power supply or a USB power source, so check that one is included and that a socket is within reach.

Frequently asked questions about HDMI signal accessories
What does an HDMI splitter do?
An HDMI splitter takes one HDMI source and sends the same picture to two or more screens. It does not show different content on each display. It suits uses such as mirroring a computer to two monitors or feeding a presentation to a projector and a TV at once.
Do I need an HDMI extender or a signal booster?
You need one when a picture flickers, drops out or fails to appear over a long cable run. A booster is usually enough for modest extra length, while an extender is the better choice when the distance is considerably greater. Check the maximum distance listed for your resolution before buying.
Will an HDMI splitter reduce picture quality?
A good splitter should not reduce quality when it supports your resolution and refresh rate. Problems usually appear when the splitter is rated below the signal you send it, for example a Full HD splitter used with a 4K source. Matching the specification to your source and screens avoids this.
Why does my screen show no picture through an HDMI switch or splitter?
The most frequent causes are missing power, a cable that cannot carry the resolution, or HDCP incompatibility between the source and one of the screens. Try connecting the source directly to a single display to isolate the fault. Then check that the accessory has power and that every cable in the chain supports the resolution you want.
