USB cables and adapters

USB cables and adapters

USB cables and adapters for connecting computers, monitors, chargers, storage and other peripherals, from short data leads to extension cables and connector converters. The range suits home users, offices and IT installers, with brands such as Delock, Goobay, StarTech.com and Belkin.

How to choose a USB cable or adapter

Connector types. Check both ends before anything else: USB-A, USB-C, micro USB and mini USB are not interchangeable without an adapter. Look at the ports on your devices and pick a cable with the matching plugs, or an adapter if the ends differ.

USB standard and speed. USB 2.0 tops out at 480 Mbit/s, which is fine for keyboards, mice and printers. For external SSDs, docks and capture devices, look for USB 3.2 at 5 or 10 Gbit/s, or USB4 at up to 40 Gbit/s. A fast port with a USB 2.0 cable will still run at USB 2.0 speed.

Charging and power. Cables for phones and tablets only need to carry a modest current. Laptop charging over USB-C needs a cable rated for the wattage of your charger, and cables for 100 W or more normally carry a chip that says so. Check the stated power rating on the product page.

Video output. Not every USB-C port can send a picture to a monitor. If you plan to use a USB-C to HDMI or DisplayPort adapter, confirm that your laptop or phone supports video output over USB-C, and check the maximum resolution and refresh rate the adapter handles.

Length and colour. Data speed and signal quality can drop on very long passive cables, so choose the shortest length that reaches comfortably. For longer distances, an extension cable with a built-in signal booster is a better option. Black is the most common colour in our range, with some white, grey and silver options, which helps if the cable stays visible on a desk.

USB cables and adapters: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a USB cable and a USB adapter?

A cable has a plug on each end and carries a connection between two devices, while an adapter converts one connector type or standard into another. Adapters are usually short and attach to an existing cable or port, for example to change USB-A to USB-C. Choose a cable when the plugs already match and an adapter when they do not.

Will a USB-C cable work with any USB-C device?

Not always. USB-C describes the plug shape only, so cables differ in data speed, charging power and video support. A basic USB-C cable may charge a phone but run slowly with an external SSD or fail to carry video to a monitor. Check the specifications for speed, power rating and video support.

How long can a USB cable be?

Passive USB 2.0 cables work reliably up to about 5 metres, and USB 3.x cables are generally best kept to around 3 metres or less. Beyond that, signal quality can drop and devices may disconnect. For longer runs, use an extension cable with a signal booster.

Does a more expensive USB cable transfer data faster?

Price alone does not set the speed. What matters is the USB standard the cable supports, such as USB 2.0, USB 3.2 or USB4, and the quality of its construction. Check the stated standard and, for charging, the power rating, rather than relying on price.
