DisplayPort adapters

DisplayPort adapters

DisplayPort adapters connect a laptop, PC or graphics card to a monitor, TV or projector that uses a different video input. Our range covers DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort to HDMI converters, plus some DisplayPort extension and HDMI variants, from brands such as Microconnect, StarTech.com, Vivolink and Lindy.

How to choose a DisplayPort adapter

Connectors and direction. Start with the port on your source and the port on your display. Most adapters in our range have a DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort plug on one end and an HDMI socket or plug on the other. Check the gender too: a male plug fits directly into a device, while a female socket lets you attach an existing cable.

Resolution and refresh rate. Pick an adapter that supports at least the resolution of your screen. Our range includes models rated for 1920 x 1080, 3840 x 2160 (4K) and 4096 x 2160, with a few listed up to 7680 x 4320 (8K). Maximum resolution is usually quoted at a certain refresh rate, so check that 4K at 60 Hz is stated if you want smooth motion.

DisplayPort version. Many adapters listed here use DisplayPort 1.2, which is enough for 4K at 60 Hz in most setups. DisplayPort 1.4 adds bandwidth for higher refresh rates and very high resolutions, so it matters if you have a gaming or high-resolution monitor. Older 1.1 models suit basic Full HD use.

Active or passive. Passive adapters rely on the source supporting HDMI signalling over DisplayPort. Active adapters contain a converter chip and are often needed for 4K output, for multi-monitor setups on some graphics cards, or when the source does not support the passive mode. If the product page does not say, check your graphics card or laptop manual.

Form and cable length. Most adapters have a straight connector, which suits desks with room behind the monitor. Short adapter leads put less strain on a port than a bulky plug hanging from it. Choose a longer cable only if the monitor sits some distance from the computer.

DisplayPort adapter FAQ

Can I use a DisplayPort to HDMI adapter for 4K?

Yes, if both the adapter and your source support it. Look for a listed maximum resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels and a stated refresh rate of 60 Hz. The HDMI input on your display and the HDMI cable you use must also handle 4K at that rate.

What is the difference between DisplayPort and Mini DisplayPort?

The signal is the same, but the plug is smaller on Mini DisplayPort. It appears on some laptops, graphics cards and older Apple devices. An adapter with a Mini DisplayPort plug connects to those ports, while a full-size DisplayPort plug will not fit.

Do I need an active DisplayPort adapter?

You need an active adapter when your source cannot output HDMI signals through a passive converter, or when you want 4K at 60 Hz on some hardware. Active adapters have a built-in chip that converts the signal. For a Full HD monitor on a modern graphics card, a passive adapter often works.

Will a DisplayPort adapter carry sound?

Most DisplayPort to HDMI adapters pass audio together with video, provided the display has speakers or an audio output. The sound setting may need to be selected in your operating system. Check the product specification if audio is essential for your setup.
