USB-C and USB video adapters connect a laptop, tablet or desktop to a monitor, projector or TV that uses HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA or DVI. Our range of over 100 models includes USB-C to HDMI and DisplayPort adapters, USB-A graphics adapters and multiport versions, from StarTech.com, Lenovo, InLine and Vivolink among others.
How to choose a USB-C or USB video adapter
Output connector. Look at the video input on your screen first and buy the adapter that ends in the same connector. Modern monitors usually have HDMI or DisplayPort, while VGA and DVI adapters are mainly for older monitors and projectors in meeting rooms.
USB-C video support. Not every USB-C port can output video. The port needs DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt, which is normally marked on the laptop with a DisplayPort or Thunderbolt symbol. Check the laptop specification before ordering.
USB-C or USB-A connection. A USB-C adapter passes the video signal straight from the laptop. A USB-A adapter creates the extra display through a driver, which suits older laptops without USB-C but is less suited to fast video or demanding graphics work.
Resolution and refresh rate. Full HD at 60 Hz is enough for office work. For a 4K monitor, check that the adapter lists 4K at 60 Hz, because some models only manage 30 Hz, which makes the pointer feel sluggish. The HDMI or DisplayPort version on the adapter and the cable you use also affect this.
Extra ports and operating conditions. Some adapters add USB ports, Ethernet or power pass-through, which saves carrying a separate dock. Listed operating temperatures in our range are mostly 0 to 40 °C or 0 to 45 °C, which is fine for offices. A few models are rated from -20 to 60 °C or up to 70 °C for workshops, kiosks and similar installations.

Frequently asked questions
Will any USB-C to HDMI adapter work with my laptop?
No, the laptop's USB-C port must support video output through DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt. Some USB-C ports only handle data and charging. Check the laptop's specification or the symbol next to the port before buying.
Can a USB adapter display 4K video?
Yes, many adapters support 4K, but the refresh rate varies. Look for 4K at 60 Hz in the specification if you want smooth motion and comfortable everyday use. Adapters limited to 4K at 30 Hz are usable for presentations but feel slow on a desktop.
Can I use a USB-A video adapter on a laptop with only USB-C?
Usually yes, with a USB-C to USB-A converter, but a native USB-C video adapter is simpler and normally more reliable. USB-A video adapters rely on a driver and share the USB bandwidth, so they are better for office use than for video or games.
Can one adapter drive two monitors?
Some multiport adapters have two video outputs, but this depends on the model and on what the laptop's graphics and USB-C port support. Check the number of supported displays in the adapter specification, and confirm that your laptop can drive that many screens.
