Video adapters and converters connect a computer, laptop or games console to a monitor, TV or projector that uses a different input. How to choose a video adapter or converter
Connector types and direction. Start with the video output on your device and the input on your screen. Our range includes DisplayPort, Mini DisplayPort, HDMI, DVI-D, VGA (D-Sub) and USB Type-C connectors. Many adapters work in one direction only, so check which end is the input before ordering.
Passive or active. A passive adapter only changes the plug shape and relies on the source port being able to output the other signal, as with many DisplayPort to HDMI adapters. Going from digital to analogue, for example HDMI to VGA, needs an active converter, which often takes power from USB.
Resolution and refresh rate. Listed maximum resolutions in our range include 1920 x 1080, 1920 x 1200, 3840 x 2160 and 4096 x 2160, with a few models rated up to 7680 x 4320. For 4K, check that the adapter supports 60 Hz as well, because some are limited to 30 Hz, which makes the cursor feel sluggish.
USB-C and docking. A USB-C video adapter only works if the laptop's USB-C port supports video output, usually through DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt. If you also need Ethernet, extra USB ports or several screens from one cable, look at the docking stations and multiport hubs.
Audio and plug gender. HDMI and DisplayPort carry sound, while VGA and DVI-D do not, so you will need a separate audio cable with those. Connector gender also matters: some products are short adapter cables with a male plug on one end and a female socket on the other, others have a male plug at both ends.

Video adapters and converters FAQ
Can I connect HDMI to VGA with a simple adapter?
Not with a plain passive adapter. HDMI is digital and VGA is analogue, so you need an active HDMI to VGA converter that translates the signal. Most of these do not carry sound, so a separate audio cable is usually needed.
Will a USB-C video adapter work with my laptop?
It works only if the laptop's USB-C port supports video output. Look for DisplayPort Alternate Mode or Thunderbolt in the laptop's specifications. A USB-C port used only for charging and data will not send a picture.
Can an adapter display 4K at 60 Hz?
Yes, if the adapter is rated for 3840 x 2160 at 60 Hz and your source, cable and screen support it too. Some adapters only manage 4K at 30 Hz, so check the refresh rate in the product details.
Do video adapters reduce picture quality?
A passive adapter does not change the picture, as it only converts the plug shape. Active converters process the signal, but a well-matched one handles its rated resolution without visible loss. Problems usually come from exceeding the adapter's resolution limit or using a very long cable.
