Video splitters and extenders

Video splitters and extenders

Video splitters and extenders send one video source to several screens, or carry a signal further than an ordinary cable can. Typical products are splitters that copy one image to multiple displays and extenders that run video over network cable or fibre. Brands include DIGITUS, StarTech.com, ATEN and LINDY. They suit offices, meeting rooms, classrooms and digital signage.

How to choose a video splitter or extender

Splitter or extender. A splitter copies one source to two or more screens in the same room. An extender is for distance: it sends the signal to a display that is too far away for a direct cable. Some products combine both jobs, so check the product title for the number of outputs and the stated range.

Connection type. Match the input and output to your equipment: HDMI, DisplayPort, DVI or VGA. Converting between types is possible with some products, but a like-for-like device is simpler and avoids signal problems. Check that the connectors on your source and displays are the same as on the device.

Resolution and refresh rate. Full HD is enough for many office screens, but 4K at 60 Hz needs a device that explicitly supports it, and an older HDMI 1.4 model will usually fall short. If you play protected content or use a media player, look for HDCP support, otherwise the picture may not appear.

Distance and cabling. Extenders commonly use Cat5e or Cat6 cable, and the maximum distance usually drops as resolution rises. A longer run at 4K may need a better cable grade or a fibre-based extender. Measure the real cable route, not the straight-line distance.

Power and extra signals. Many splitters and extenders need a mains adapter, while some take power from the source. Also check whether audio, USB, infrared remote control or RS-232 signals are passed through if you need them at the far end.

Video splitters and extenders: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a video splitter and a video extender?

A splitter duplicates one video source onto several displays, usually within a few metres. An extender sends the signal over a long distance, typically through network cable or fibre, to a display or receiver unit. If you need both, look for an extender kit with several receivers.

Can a video splitter show different images on each screen?

No, a standard splitter shows the same picture on every connected display. To show different content on each screen, you need a graphics card or docking station with multiple outputs, or a matrix switch. This is a common point of confusion when buying.

How far can I extend an HDMI signal?

A normal HDMI cable works reliably for only a few metres at high resolutions. HDMI extenders using network cable commonly reach tens of metres, and fibre or IP-based systems go further. The stated distance usually applies to a specific resolution and cable grade, so check both before buying.

Do I need a splitter that supports 4K and HDCP?

Yes, if your source or screens are 4K or you show protected content such as streamed video or Blu-ray. A splitter that supports only Full HD will lower the resolution or fail to display the picture. Look for 4K at 60 Hz and HDCP in the product specification.
