Firewalls in this category are dedicated network security appliances for small offices, branch sites and larger company networks. Our range of over 15 models comes mainly from Zyxel and Cisco, with further firewalls from Rohde & Schwarz and D-Link.
They sit between your internet connection and your internal network to filter traffic, enforce access rules and terminate VPN connections.
How to choose a firewall
Throughput. Check the speed the firewall can sustain with security features switched on, not just the headline figure for plain routing. Inspection, intrusion prevention and content filtering all reduce throughput, so pick a model with comfortable headroom over your internet line speed.
Security features and licences. Many business firewalls need a subscription to unlock features such as intrusion prevention, web filtering, antivirus or sandboxing. Find out which functions are included in the hardware price and which require a licence, and factor the renewal into your plans.
Ports and connectivity. Count the gigabit LAN and WAN ports you need, and check for SFP slots if you connect over fibre or to a core switch. A second WAN port allows failover to a backup internet line, which matters if your business depends on being online.
VPN requirements. Work out how many remote workers and branch offices will connect, and which VPN types you use, such as IPsec or SSL. Each model supports a limited number of simultaneous tunnels, and VPN speed is usually lower than plain firewall speed.
Form factor and management. Small desktop units suit an office cupboard or a desk, while rackmount models fit a server room. Consider whether you want to manage the device locally or through a cloud console, especially if you look after several sites.
Firewall brands we carry
- Zyxel: known for firewalls aimed at small and medium businesses, with cloud-based management available across much of its security line.
- Cisco: a long-standing enterprise networking vendor whose firewalls are common in larger organisations and fit into wider Cisco network setups.
- Rohde & Schwarz: a German technology group with a strong focus on IT security, offering firewalls for organisations that value data protection and control.
- D-Link: a networking brand best known for switches, routers and wireless equipment, with firewalls suited to smaller networks.
Firewall FAQ
What is a hardware firewall?
A hardware firewall is a dedicated device that inspects traffic between your network and the internet and blocks anything that breaks your rules. It runs separately from your computers, so it protects every connected device at once. Many models also add VPN, web filtering and intrusion prevention.
Do I need a firewall if my router already has one?
Most routers include a basic firewall that is enough for home use. A dedicated firewall becomes worthwhile when you need detailed rules, VPN access for staff, traffic inspection or separate network zones. Businesses that handle customer data or allow remote access usually benefit from one.
Which firewall suits a small office?
A small office usually needs a desktop model with gigabit ports, VPN support and enough throughput for the number of users and the internet speed. Models from Zyxel and D-Link are typically aimed at this size of network. Check the number of VPN tunnels and licence costs before you decide.
Do firewalls need a subscription?
Many do for advanced features, though not all. The basic firewall and routing functions normally work without one, but services such as intrusion prevention, web filtering and antivirus updates often require a licence. Read the product details to see exactly what is included.
