KVM and video switches let one keyboard, monitor and mouse control several computers or servers, while video switches share one display between several sources. How to choose a KVM or video switch
Video connection. Match the switch to your monitor and computers. Among models with video port data in our range, HDMI is the most common, followed by VGA, DVI-I and DisplayPort. Using adapters is possible, but a switch with the right native port avoids resolution limits and signal problems.
Resolution and refresh rate. Check the maximum resolution the switch supports, not just the port type. If you work with a 4K monitor or need a smooth 60 Hz picture, the switch must be rated for it, otherwise the image may drop to a lower setting.
Number of computers. Count the machines you connect today and add one or two spare ports. Small desktop switches usually handle two or four computers, while larger installations in server racks use units with eight or more ports or can be daisy-chained.
Keyboard and mouse connection. Most models with this data in our range use USB, and a few still use PS/2 for older equipment. Some video-only switches have no keyboard or mouse ports at all, so choose a true KVM model if you want to switch the peripherals as well as the screen.
Desktop or rack use. A desktop unit sits next to the monitor and is switched with buttons or keyboard hotkeys. Server rooms usually need rack-mountable hardware and a wider tolerance for conditions: many products in our range are rated for 0 to 40 °C and 0 to 80% relative humidity, and some go up to 50 or 70 °C. LED indicators, which show the active port, are listed on several models and make a multi-port switch easier to use.

What does a KVM switch do?
A KVM switch lets you operate several computers from one keyboard, one mouse and one monitor. You select the active computer with a button or a hotkey, and the screen and peripherals follow. It saves desk space and removes the need for a separate monitor for every machine.
What is the difference between a KVM switch and a video switch?
A KVM switch passes the video signal and also shares the keyboard and mouse, while a video switch only shares the display. If you just want to view two sources on one screen, such as a PC and a games console, a video switch is enough. For controlling several computers, choose a KVM switch.
Which video port should I choose, HDMI or DisplayPort?
Choose the port your monitor and computers already use. HDMI is the most common connection in our range, and DisplayPort, DVI-I and VGA are also available. Using the same standard throughout avoids adapters, which can limit resolution or cause the picture to drop out.
How many computers can one KVM switch control?
