Access points

Access points

Access points add Wi-Fi to a wired network, and this category suits offices, shops, schools, warehouses and larger homes. Our range covers indoor models as well as units rated for wide temperature ranges, from brands such as Cisco, HP Enterprise, TP-Link and Ubiquiti.

How to choose an access point

Wi-Fi standard and speed. Maximum 2.4 GHz data rates in our range run from 300 Mbit/s to over 1,300 Mbit/s. These are theoretical link speeds shared between all connected devices, so a newer Wi-Fi standard with dual-band or tri-band support matters more in a busy network than one headline figure.

Coverage and number of users. One access point covers a limited area, and walls and floors reduce that area quickly. In a meeting room, classroom or open-plan office, the number of devices connecting at once is usually the limiting factor, so plan by users first and floor space second.

Power and wiring. Most access points are powered over Ethernet (PoE), so check that your switch supplies the right PoE standard or budget for a PoE injector. Models in our range have between one and four RJ-45 LAN ports, and extra ports are useful when a wired device such as a printer or IP phone sits near the access point.

Management. Standalone units are configured one by one, while controller-based and cloud-managed systems let you handle many access points from one screen. If you expect to add more later, choose a brand whose access points, switches and management software work together.

Antennas and environment. Most models with antenna data in our range have internal antennas, which suit ceilings and walls. External antennas allow directional coverage. Operating temperatures are typically 0 to 40 °C, but some models are rated from -40 to 70 °C for cold stores, factories and outdoor enclosures.

Access point brands we carry

  • Cisco: the largest brand in this category, known for enterprise Wi-Fi and the cloud-managed Meraki line.
  • HP Enterprise: offers wireless access points under the Aruba name, aimed at business and campus networks.
  • TP-Link: known for the Omada range, which combines access points with central management at a modest scale.
  • Ubiquiti: makes the UniFi system, popular for managing access points, switches and gateways from a single controller.
  • Cambium Networks: focuses on business Wi-Fi and fixed wireless links for sites that need longer-range connections.
  • Siemens: supplies industrial wireless equipment for factory and automation networks.
  • Ruckus: known for adaptive antenna technology that directs the signal towards connected devices.
  • Zyxel: offers the Nebula cloud platform for managing access points and switches remotely.
  • MikroTik: uses RouterOS, which gives detailed control over network settings.
  • Grandstream Networks: combines Wi-Fi access points with VoIP telephony products.

Also in our range: Alcatel and D-Link.

Access points: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an access point and a router?

A router connects your network to the internet and directs traffic between devices, while an access point only provides wireless connections to an existing wired network. Many home routers include Wi-Fi, but an access point is added when one router cannot cover the whole building.

Do I need PoE for an access point?

No, but it makes installation much easier. PoE sends power and data through one network cable, so you do not need a power socket near a ceiling-mounted unit. Check which PoE standard the access point needs and whether your switch provides it, or use a PoE injector.

How many access points do I need?

It depends on the building layout and the number of devices, not only on floor area. A small office may need one, while a multi-room office or school usually needs several placed so their coverage overlaps slightly. A site survey gives the most reliable answer for larger spaces.

Can I mix access points from different brands?

Yes, they will all connect to the same wired network, but each brand has its own management system. Mixing brands usually means configuring each one separately and can limit features such as roaming between access points. For a larger network, staying with one brand is simpler.
