Wireless bridges and CPE

Wireless bridges and CPE units link two buildings or sites over a radio connection, or connect a customer location to a wireless network. They suit small internet providers, farms, estates and businesses with outbuildings, as well as anyone who needs a network link where laying cable is impractical. Our range comes from Ubiquiti and MikroTik.

How to choose a wireless bridge or CPE

Distance and line of sight. Measure the length of the link first, then check that nothing solid sits between the two ends. Trees, buildings and hills reduce range, and a clear path matters far more than the maximum distance printed on the box.

Frequency band. Most outdoor links use 5 GHz, which offers more free channels and less interference than 2.4 GHz. The 2.4 GHz band copes better with light obstructions but is usually more crowded. Very high frequency bands can carry a lot of data but only over short, unobstructed hops.

Antenna and throughput. Units with a built-in directional antenna are simple to install and aimed at a single target. Models with connectors let you fit a different antenna for longer links. Real-world speed is always lower than the headline figure, so choose a unit with comfortable headroom above the speed you need.

Operating mode and software. Decide whether the device will act as a point-to-point bridge, a base station serving several clients, or a client unit connecting to an existing network. Ubiquiti devices run airOS or related software, while MikroTik devices run RouterOS, which includes extensive routing and firewall features. Pick the one you or your installer already know.

Power and mounting. Most outdoor units are powered over Ethernet, but the PoE standard and voltage differ between models, so use the injector that matches. Check the pole-mount hardware, the weather rating, and plan for grounding and surge protection on exposed roof or mast installations.

Wireless bridge and CPE brands we carry

  • Ubiquiti: known for its airMAX radios, which are widely used for point-to-point and point-to-multipoint links and are managed through the airOS interface. Most of the products in this category come from Ubiquiti.
  • MikroTik: known for RouterOS, a software platform that gives full routing, firewall and queue control on the same device that handles the wireless link. This suits installers who want detailed control over traffic.

Both brands are supported by large communities of installers, so setup guides and configuration examples are easy to find.

Wireless bridges and CPE: frequently asked questions

What is a wireless bridge?

A wireless bridge is a device that joins two wired networks over a radio link, so computers at both ends behave as if they share one network. It replaces a long cable run between buildings. You normally need a bridge at each end, set up to face the other.

What is the difference between a wireless bridge and CPE?

A bridge usually describes a pair of devices linking two sites, while CPE (customer premises equipment) describes the unit installed at the customer's location to receive a signal from a base station. In practice the same hardware often does both jobs. What changes is how you configure it.

How far can a wireless bridge reach?

Range depends on the model, the antenna, the frequency and the conditions, and links of many kilometres are possible with clear line of sight and well-aimed directional antennas. Obstructions, weather and interference shorten that distance. Always check the manufacturer's stated range and leave a margin.

Do I need two devices for a point-to-point link?

Yes, a point-to-point link needs a unit at each end, and it is easiest when both come from the same brand and product family. If you only need to connect to an existing base station or access point, a single CPE unit at your location can be enough.
