Network equipment

Network equipment

Network equipment covers the hardware that connects computers, phones, cameras and servers: network switches, routers, antennas, WiFi access points, powerline adapters, modems and firewalls. It suits home users, small offices and IT installers. Our range includes TP-Link, Ubiquiti, Cisco and MikroTik.

How to choose network equipment

Device type. A router connects your network to the internet and directs traffic. A switch adds wired ports, and an access point adds WiFi to an existing wired network. A firewall filters traffic between your network and the outside, and a modem is only needed when your line requires one.

Port speed and PoE. Gigabit ports are enough for most homes and offices, while 2.5G and 10G ports suit network storage, servers and busy uplinks between switches. If you plan to run access points or IP cameras, look for Power over Ethernet (PoE) so a single cable carries both data and power. Buy a few more ports than you need today.

Managed or unmanaged. An unmanaged switch works as soon as it is plugged in. A managed switch lets you set up VLANs, prioritise traffic and monitor ports, which matters once several departments, guest networks or voice systems share the same cabling.

WiFi standard and coverage. Check the WiFi generation (WiFi 6, 6E or 7) and the number of devices it must serve. In larger buildings, several ceiling-mounted access points usually work better than one strong router. External antennas help with long links or awkward signal paths, and powerline adapters are an option where running a cable is not possible. Many devices in our range come in black or white, with some in grey or silver, which is worth a look if the unit will be visible.

Network equipment brands we carry

  • TP-Link: known for affordable home routers and mesh systems, as well as the Omada range for small business networks.
  • Ubiquiti: its UniFi switches, access points and gateways are managed from a single controller.
  • Cisco: a long-standing enterprise name for switches, routers and firewalls, including the Meraki cloud-managed range.
  • MikroTik: builds routers and switches that run RouterOS, a detailed system favoured by network administrators and wireless internet providers.
  • Teltonika: a Lithuanian maker of industrial cellular routers and gateways for sites without fixed lines.
  • Netgear: offers Nighthawk and Orbi home WiFi systems alongside business switches.
  • Zyxel: covers business switches, firewalls and access points for small and medium-sized companies.
  • HPE: owns Aruba, known for enterprise switches and WiFi access points.
  • Planet: known for PoE and industrial switches.

Also in our range: Lenovo, DeLock and D-Link. Most shoppers start in network switches, routers or antennas, which are the largest subcategories, while WiFi access points, powerline adapters, modems and firewalls cover more specific jobs.

Network equipment FAQ

What is the difference between a switch and a router?

A router connects your network to the internet and assigns addresses to devices, while a switch only extends the local network with more wired ports. Most homes need one router, and a switch is added when you run out of ports. Some routers include a small built-in switch.

Do I need a PoE switch?

A PoE switch is worth choosing if you want to power devices such as WiFi access points, IP cameras or VoIP phones through the network cable. It removes the need for a power socket at each device. Check the total power budget of the switch against the devices you plan to connect.

Is an access point better than a WiFi extender?

In most cases, yes, provided the access point can be connected to your network by cable. It delivers a full-speed signal in a new area, whereas an extender usually repeats the signal wirelessly and loses some speed. Access points are also easier to manage in larger homes and offices.

When should I use powerline adapters?

Powerline adapters are useful when you need a wired connection in a room where laying a network cable is not practical. They send data through your electrical wiring, so speed depends on the quality of the wiring. They work best on the same electrical circuit, and a direct cable is still the more stable option.
