SD cards

SD cards

This category holds full-size SD cards for cameras, camcorders, laptops, card readers, dashcams and other devices with an SD slot, from basic storage cards to fast cards for 4K video. With over 500 models, the range includes SanDisk, Transcend, Kingston and Intenso.

How to choose an SD card

Card type and capacity. SDHC cards hold up to 32 GB, while SDXC cards start above that and go up to 2 TB. Check your device manual first, because older cameras and card readers may only accept SDHC. Photographers shooting JPEG can manage with a modest capacity, but RAW photos and video fill a card quickly.

Speed class. Look for the UHS speed class (U1 or U3) and the video speed class (V30, V60, V90). For Full HD video, a Class 10 or U1 card is usually enough. For 4K video, choose U3 or V30 at minimum, and move up to V60 or V90 for high-bitrate or RAW video.

Read and write speed. The large number on the label is normally the maximum read speed. Write speed is what matters when recording video or shooting bursts of photos, and it is often lower. Compare the write figure, or the speed class, rather than the headline number.

Intended use. Standard cards suit photos and occasional file transfers. Dashcams and security cameras overwrite footage constantly, so cards sold as high endurance are built for that workload. Cameras that record long clips or burst sequences benefit from cards with a guaranteed minimum write speed.

SD card FAQ

What is the difference between SDHC and SDXC?

SDHC cards hold up to 32 GB and SDXC cards hold more than 32 GB, up to 2 TB. SDXC cards use the exFAT file system by default, which some older devices do not support. If your camera or reader is more than a few years old, check that it lists SDXC support before buying.

Which SD card do I need for 4K video?

A card rated U3 or V30 is the usual minimum for 4K video. Higher bitrate recording, such as 4K at high frame rates, may call for V60 or V90. Your camera manual normally states the required speed class.

Why is my SD card slower than the speed on the label?

The speed printed on the label is normally a maximum read speed measured in ideal conditions. Real transfers depend on the card reader, the USB port, the file size and the card's write speed. A slow reader can limit even a fast card.

Can I use a normal SD card in a dashcam?

You can, but a card designed for high endurance is the better choice. Dashcams record continuously and overwrite old footage, which wears out standard cards faster. Check the maximum capacity your dashcam supports before buying.
