USB flash drives

USB flash drives

USB flash drives are pocket-sized storage sticks for carrying documents, photos and backups between computers, and our range runs from everyday drives to hardware-encrypted models for sensitive data. We stock over 15 models from brands such as Apricorn, Transcend, SanDisk and Kingston.

Most are plugged straight into a USB port, so no cables or extra power are needed.

How to choose a USB flash drive

Purpose. Decide first whether the drive is for convenience or for protecting data. A plain stick is fine for moving presentations and photos, while a drive that holds client files, financial records or personal documents deserves built-in encryption.

Capacity. Pick the size by what you actually carry. Text documents and spreadsheets need very little room, but video footage, disk images and large photo libraries fill a small drive quickly. If you are unsure, take the next size up, because a full flash drive slows down and leaves no room for a second copy.

Connector and speed. Check the port on your computer before buying. Many laptops now offer only USB-C, and a USB-A stick then needs an adapter. Speed matters most when you copy large files: a drive with a USB 3 interface is much faster than an older USB 2.0 model, provided the port you plug it into supports it too.

Security. Hardware encryption protects the files on the drive itself, without relying on software installed on each computer. Some encrypted drives are unlocked with a PIN keypad on the body, which also means they work on systems where you cannot install programs. Without a PIN, the data stays unreadable if the drive is lost.

Build and size. A metal or sturdy casing survives a bag or a key ring better than a thin plastic one. A retractable connector or a cap protects the plug, and a very small drive can stay in a laptop port, though it is also easier to lose.

USB flash drive brands we carry

  • Apricorn: known for Aegis hardware-encrypted drives, many of them unlocked with an on-device PIN keypad, and the largest group in our range.
  • Transcend: a long-established memory maker whose JetFlash series covers simple everyday sticks as well as faster USB 3 models.
  • SanDisk: one of the most familiar names in flash storage, with the Ultra and Extreme lines aimed at general use and faster transfers.
  • Kingston: the maker of the DataTraveler series and also associated with encrypted IronKey drives for business use.
  • Kioxia: a flash memory manufacturer formed from Toshiba's memory business, so its drives are built around its own NAND chips.
  • Satechi: mainly known for USB-C accessories and hubs designed to match Apple laptops.

USB flash drive FAQ

How much capacity do I need on a USB flash drive?

For documents and photos, a small capacity is usually enough. For video, software installers or full backups, choose a larger drive. A good rule is to buy about double what you plan to store now, so there is room for growth.

Do I need a USB-C or a USB-A flash drive?

Choose the connector that matches the computer you use most. Recent laptops and many phones use USB-C, while desktops and older laptops still rely on USB-A. Dual-connector drives and small adapters cover both if you switch between devices.

Are encrypted USB flash drives worth it?

Yes, if the drive holds information that would cause harm if someone else read it. Encryption makes the contents unreadable without the PIN or password, even if the drive is lost or stolen. For holiday photos or school projects it is usually unnecessary.

Will a USB flash drive work on both Windows and Mac?

Most drives work on both, but the file system decides how smoothly. A drive formatted as exFAT can be read and written on both Windows and macOS. Drives formatted only for one system may need reformatting, which erases the files on them.
