How to choose a server rack
Height in rack units. One rack unit (1U) is 44.45 mm of mounting height. Add up the units your servers, switches and patch panels need, then allow some spare space for growth. Small wall-mounted cabinets suit a few network devices, while full-height floor-standing racks are meant for server equipment.
Depth and width. Mounting width of 19 inches is the standard, but the cabinet itself is usually 600 mm or 800 mm wide, and the wider one leaves more room for cables at the sides. Servers are often much deeper than switches, so check the device depth plus space for cables and connectors before choosing the rack depth.
Load capacity. Racks, shelves and rails each have their own weight rating. Heavy servers, UPS units and storage arrays call for reinforced shelves or sliding rails, and the rack's total static load should be checked as well.
Airflow and cooling. Perforated doors let air pass through, and blanking panels stop warm air circulating back to the front of the equipment. In a closed or poorly ventilated room, rack fans or a fan unit help keep temperatures stable.
Power and cabling. A PDU with enough sockets keeps power tidy, and cable management panels and rings keep patch cables from blocking airflow. Cage nuts, screws and rails must match the mounting holes of your rack, so check the hole type before ordering.

What size server rack do I need?
Choose a rack with at least 20 to 30 percent more rack units than your equipment needs today. Add up the height of every device, including patch panels, shelves and PDUs. Then check that the rack depth fits your deepest server with cables attached.
What does 19-inch rack mean?
A 19-inch rack has a standard mounting width of 19 inches (482.6 mm) between the rails. Most servers, switches and patch panels are built to this width, so they fit racks from different manufacturers. The outer cabinet is wider than 19 inches to hold the frame.
Do I need blanking panels in a server rack?
Yes, blanking panels are worth fitting in any unused rack space. They close the gaps at the front so that air is drawn through the equipment rather than around it. This improves cooling and also gives the rack a tidier look.
Can I put any server in any rack?
Not always. Most rack-mount servers use the 19-inch standard, but depth, weight and rail type differ between models. Check the server's depth and rail requirements against the rack, and confirm that the shelves or rails can carry its weight.
