How to choose a charger or power bank
Capacity. Power bank capacity is quoted in mAh or Wh. Most phone batteries sit between 3,000 and 5,000 mAh, so a 10,000 mAh power bank usually gives about two full charges, as some energy is lost as heat. Laptops need far more, so compare watt-hours rather than mAh.
Output power and ports. Match the output in watts to the device. A phone is comfortable with around 20 W, while many laptops want 45 W to 100 W over USB-C Power Delivery. A charger that delivers less than the device expects will charge slowly, or not at all while the laptop is working.
Compatibility. For a replacement laptop charger, read the voltage, wattage and connector type on the original adapter. The voltage must match, and the wattage should be equal to or higher than the original. For phones and tablets, check that the charger supports the fast-charging standard the device uses.
Safety and travel. Look for CE marking and built-in protection against overcharging, short circuits and overheating. Airlines generally allow power banks in cabin baggage only, and units above 100 Wh normally need airline approval.
Size and cables. A slim power bank fits a pocket but holds less, while a larger one adds capacity and weight. Check whether a cable is included and which connector it has, so you do not need to buy one separately.

What size power bank do I need?
For a phone, 10,000 mAh is enough for about two charges and still fits in a pocket or bag. Choose 20,000 mAh or more if you travel for several days or charge a tablet as well. For a laptop, pick a model that states its output in watts and its capacity in Wh.
Can I take a power bank on a plane?
Yes, but it must go in your cabin baggage, not in the hold. Most airlines allow power banks up to 100 Wh without approval, and larger ones need the airline's permission. Check the Wh figure printed on the unit before you travel.
Can I use a different charger for my laptop?
Yes, if the voltage matches and the wattage is the same as or higher than the original. The connector must also fit, or the charger must use USB-C with enough Power Delivery output. A charger with too low a wattage may not keep the laptop charged under load.
Will a higher-wattage charger damage my phone?
No, a higher-wattage charger will not damage a phone that is designed to charge safely. The phone and charger negotiate the power level, and the phone draws only what it can accept. A 65 W charger will therefore charge a phone at the phone's own maximum speed.
