Smart plugs and actuators

Smart plugs and actuators

Smart plugs and actuators let you switch mains-powered devices on and off remotely, on a schedule or from a smart home system. The category suits home users automating lamps and appliances as well as installers extending a smart home or monitoring setup. Brands in our range include EQ-3, TP-LINK, EATON and AXIS COMMUNICATIONS.

How to choose a smart plug or actuator

Control system. Decide first which platform the device must work with. Wi-Fi plugs connect straight to your router and an app, while actuators from systems such as Homematic IP usually need their own central unit. Mixing ecosystems is possible but often limits automation features.

Plug-in or built-in. A plug-in smart plug sits between the wall socket and the appliance, so it needs no wiring and can be moved freely. A switch actuator is installed in a wall box, distribution board or behind an existing switch, and suits fixed lighting or permanent equipment. Installed actuators should be fitted by a qualified electrician.

Load rating. Check the maximum current or wattage printed on the product and compare it with the appliance. Heaters, kettles and pumps draw far more than LED lamps or chargers, and an overloaded relay is a fire risk. Motor-driven and very inductive loads also need a device rated for them.

Energy monitoring and extra functions. Some models report power use, which helps you find devices that waste electricity on standby. Others add timers, overload protection or scene control. Pick these only if you will use them, since simple on and off switching costs less to set up.

Socket type and approvals. Make sure the plug fits your sockets and that the device carries the safety marks expected for use in South Africa. A plug that fits loosely or lacks proper approval is not worth the saving.

Smart plug and actuator brands we carry

  • EQ-3: the German maker behind Homematic and Homematic IP, a modular smart home system with switch actuators, sensors and a central control unit. It is the largest brand in this category in our range.
  • TP-LINK: known for home networking equipment and for a smart home line of Wi-Fi plugs that are managed through a phone app.
  • EATON: a power management specialist, best known for UPS units and power distribution products.
  • AXIS COMMUNICATIONS: a network video and security specialist, known for IP cameras and networked devices that integrate into larger monitoring systems.
  • ANSMANN: a German brand known for batteries, chargers and power accessories.

Also in our range: LOGILINK and QOLTEC.

Smart plugs and actuators: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a smart plug and an actuator?

A smart plug is a plug-in adapter that switches whatever is connected to it, while an actuator is a switching module that is usually installed in the wiring. Both do the same basic job of opening and closing a circuit on command. The choice depends on whether you want a movable, no-tools solution or a permanent installation.

Do smart plugs need a hub?

Not always. Wi-Fi smart plugs normally connect directly to your router and are set up through an app. Systems based on other radio protocols, such as Homematic IP, generally need a central unit that links the actuators to your network.

Can I connect any appliance to a smart plug?

No, only appliances within the rated load of the plug. Low-power items such as lamps, fans and chargers are usually fine. High-draw appliances such as heaters and kettles need a plug rated for that current, and some devices should not be cut off suddenly, so check the appliance manual first.

Do smart plugs save electricity?

They can, mainly by cutting standby power on devices you leave plugged in all day. A plug with energy monitoring shows how much a device really uses, so you can see where switching it off completely makes a difference. The plug itself also draws a small amount of power, so the saving is largest on devices with high standby consumption.
