How to choose a surge protector
Number of outlets. Count everything you will plug in, then add one or two spare sockets. Our range runs from 2 to 8 AC outlets, and strips with 3 to 5 outlets are the most common. Bulky power adapters can block neighbouring sockets, so check the spacing as well as the count.
Cable length. Measure the distance from the wall socket to your equipment before ordering. A 1.5 m cable is the usual length in our range, while 3 m and 4 m versions suit desks that sit far from the wall. Avoid chaining strips together to gain reach, because that overloads the first one.
Protection level. Look for the energy absorption rating in joules and the clamping voltage on the specification sheet. A higher joule rating generally means the unit can absorb more surge energy. For a PC, monitor or home cinema, choose a model that states these figures clearly rather than one that only says surge protected.
Switch and indicators. A main on/off switch lets you cut power to everything at once, which is handy for standby-heavy setups such as a TV and games console. Many models in our range have one. A light that shows whether the protection circuit is still working is also worth having.
Total load. Add up the wattage of the connected devices and keep it comfortably below the strip's maximum rated load. Kettles, heaters and other high-draw appliances do not belong on a surge protector meant for electronics.

Surge protector FAQ
What is the difference between a surge protector and an extension lead?
A surge protector contains components that divert excess voltage away from your devices, while a basic extension lead only adds more sockets. Some power strips look identical but offer no protection at all. Check the product description for a joule rating or the words surge protection.
Does a surge protector work during a power cut?
No, a surge protector does not keep devices running when the power fails. It only guards against voltage spikes. For continued power to a PC or router, you need a UPS, and many people use one alongside a surge protector.
How many outlets do I need?
Count your devices and add at least one spare outlet. A desk with a PC, monitor and speakers usually needs 4 or 5 sockets, and a TV setup with a console and soundbar is similar. Our range goes up to 8 outlets for larger workstations.
How long does a surge protector last?
There is no fixed lifespan, because the protection components wear down each time they absorb a surge. After a major electrical event, such as a nearby lightning strike, replace the unit even if it still powers your devices. Models with a protection indicator light make this easier to judge.
