This category covers screwdriver bits and screwdrivers for fastening work, from bits for drill drivers and impact drivers to powered screwdrivers for assembly and site jobs. It suits tradespeople, installers and keen DIYers. Leading brands in our range include Makita, Bosch, DeWalt and Yato.
How to choose screwdriver bits and screwdrivers
Drive type and size. Match the bit to the screw head: Phillips (PH), Pozidriv (PZ), Torx, slotted or hex. PZ2 and PH2 are common for wood and plasterboard screws, while Torx is widely used on decking and construction screws. A bit that fits loosely rounds off the screw head quickly.
Impact rating. Bits made for impact drivers have a flex zone that absorbs sudden torque. Ordinary bits can snap under that load, so check for an impact-rated marking if you will use a cordless impact driver.
Shank and length. Most bits have a 1/4 inch hex shank, which fits the majority of impact drivers and many drill chucks and bit holders. Short bits suit tight spots, while longer bits reach screws set into recesses or through thick material.
Powered or manual. A powered screwdriver saves effort on repetitive work and often has torque settings that help avoid overdriving screws. If you already own batteries from Makita, Bosch or DeWalt, choosing the same platform lets you share them across tools.
Set or single bits. A bit set covers mixed jobs and keeps sizes organised in a case. Single bits make more sense for replacing the one size you wear out most often, usually PH2, PZ2 or a common Torx size.

Screwdriver bits and screwdrivers: frequently asked questions
Can I use normal bits in an impact driver?
It is possible, but not advisable. Standard bits are harder and more brittle, so they can snap under the sudden torque of an impact driver. Bits marked as impact-rated are designed to flex slightly and last longer in this use.
What is the difference between Phillips and Pozidriv bits?
Pozidriv (PZ) heads have extra small marks between the main slots and grip more firmly than Phillips (PH). The two look similar, but a Phillips bit in a Pozidriv screw tends to slip and damage the head. Check the screw packaging or the head markings and use the matching bit.
What size bit do I need for most screws?
PZ2 is the most common size for general wood screws in many countries, and PH2 is the usual Phillips equivalent. Torx screws are sized as T20, T25 and so on, with T25 common on decking and construction screws. A mixed set is the easiest way to cover these.
Do I need a cordless screwdriver or a drill driver?
A cordless screwdriver is better for light, repetitive fastening and is easier to handle for long periods. A drill driver or impact driver suits drilling and driving long screws into dense material. If your work includes both, a drill driver with a good bit set covers most tasks.
