Compressors and pneumatic tools

Compressors and pneumatic tools

This category brings together air compressors and the pneumatic tools that run from them, with over 200 models for home workshops, DIY users and tradespeople. Leading brands in our range include Einhell, Stanley, Makita and Bosch. Buyers can choose from small portable units for inflating and light nailing to larger machines for continuous workshop use.

How to choose a compressor or pneumatic tool

Air delivery. Look at the litres of air per minute the compressor delivers, not only the motor power. Tools that use air continuously, such as sanders, grinders and spray guns, need a compressor that delivers more than the tool consumes. Nailers, staplers and tyre inflators draw air in short bursts, so a smaller unit is usually enough.

Working pressure. Most pneumatic tools are rated for around 6 to 8 bar. Choose a compressor whose maximum pressure is at or above the figure on the tool, then set the regulator to the tool's recommended level.

Tank size. A larger tank stores more air, so the motor starts less often and the supply stays steadier during longer jobs. A small tank keeps the machine lighter and easier to carry, which suits occasional tasks around the house or on site.

Oil-free or oil-lubricated. Oil-free compressors need less maintenance and are lighter, but many are noisier. Oil-lubricated models are generally quieter and built for heavier, longer use, though they need regular oil checks.

Noise and portability. Check the stated noise level if the compressor will run in a garage or a shared space. Wheels and a carry handle matter if you move the machine between rooms or jobs, and a long enough hose saves repositioning.

Brands we carry in compressors and pneumatic tools

  • Einhell: the largest brand in our range, known for affordable power tools and compressors aimed at home workshops and keen DIY users.
  • Stanley: a long-established tool brand that offers compressors and air accessories for garages, workshops and general DIY.
  • Makita: best known for cordless power tools, and also makes compressors that are often chosen for lower noise in indoor use.
  • Bosch: sells tools in two ranges, green for DIY and blue for professionals, so you can match the machine to how often you work.
  • Metabo: a German manufacturer with a strong professional following, particularly for workshop and site equipment.
  • DeWalt: focused on tough site tools for tradespeople, including portable compressors that are moved between jobs.

Also in our range: Rapid Tools, Etenwolf, Brady, Novus, Aerotec and Bradas.

Frequently asked questions about compressors and pneumatic tools

What size compressor do I need for a nail gun?

A small portable compressor is normally enough for a nail gun or stapler, because these tools use air only in short bursts. Check the tool's required pressure and air consumption, and pick a compressor that meets both. A tank of a few litres is usually adequate for light work, while heavy framing benefits from a larger tank.

Is an oil-free compressor better than an oil-lubricated one?

Neither is better in every case. Oil-free compressors are lighter and need very little upkeep, which suits occasional use. Oil-lubricated compressors are usually quieter and better suited to long, frequent workloads, but you must keep the oil topped up.

What bar pressure do pneumatic tools need?

Most pneumatic tools work at around 6 to 8 bar. The exact figure is printed on the tool or in its manual. Your compressor should be able to reach at least that pressure, and the regulator lets you set it lower when needed.

Can I run an impact wrench or spray gun from a small compressor?

Usually not for long. Impact wrenches, sanders and spray guns need a steady, high flow of air, and a small compressor will struggle to keep up. Compare the tool's air consumption with the compressor's delivery in litres per minute, and choose a model with a larger tank and higher output for these jobs.
