This category contains electric chainsaws, both cordless battery models and corded mains models, for homeowners who prune trees and cut logs as well as for heavier garden work. Leading brands in our range are Makita, Bosch and Black+Decker, with Mowox also available.
How to choose a chainsaw
Power source. Battery chainsaws let you work away from a socket and are easy to start, which suits large plots and jobs far from the house. Corded models run for as long as you need without recharging, but the cable limits your reach. Our range includes both battery and mains (AC) models. Petrol saws also exist in general, but they are not what you will find here.
Bar length and the job. The guide bar determines the thickest branch or log you can cut in one pass. Shorter bars are lighter and easier to control for pruning and light tidying. Longer bars suit felling small trees and cutting firewood, but they add weight and need more power behind them.
Chain speed. A faster chain generally cuts more cleanly and quickly when the chain is sharp and the motor can hold its speed under load. Chain speeds of 12 m/s and 14 m/s appear in our range. Compare this figure alongside motor power or battery voltage, because speed on its own does not describe real cutting performance.
Battery platform. If you choose a cordless saw, check whether the battery fits other tools you already own. Sharing batteries and chargers across a hedge trimmer, a blower and a chainsaw saves money and storage space. Also consider how much runtime you need for a full session of cutting.
Safety and handling. Look for a chain brake, a hand guard and a chain catcher, and check the weight, since you will be holding the saw at awkward angles. Protective gloves, eye protection and chainsaw trousers are sensible additions for anyone cutting regularly.
Chainsaw brands we carry
- Makita: a Japanese power tool maker known for its 18V LXT cordless system, which allows one battery to power many different tools.
- Bosch: sells garden tools under two lines, green for home users and blue for professionals, so you can match the saw to how often you work.
- Black+Decker: focuses on home and garden tools for occasional use, including corded and cordless saws for pruning and light log cutting.
Also in our range: Mowox.
Chainsaw FAQ
Is a battery or a corded chainsaw better?
It depends on where you work. A battery chainsaw is better when you move around the garden or work far from a power point, while a corded saw suits cutting close to the house for longer sessions. Corded models do not run out of charge, but you must manage the cable.
What bar length do I need for a garden chainsaw?
For pruning and trimming branches, a shorter bar is usually enough and easier to handle. For cutting firewood or felling small trees, choose a longer bar so you can cut through thicker trunks in one pass. Keep in mind that a longer bar needs a stronger motor or battery.
What does chain speed mean on a chainsaw?
Chain speed is how fast the chain moves around the guide bar, measured in metres per second. Higher speeds generally give faster cutting when the chain is sharp. In our range you will see figures such as 12 m/s and 14 m/s.
How do I look after a chainsaw chain?
Keep the chain lubricated with the correct chain oil and sharpen it when it starts producing fine dust instead of proper wood chips. Check the chain tension before each use, as a loose chain can come off the bar. Clean the saw after use and store it with the guard on.
