Grinders and sanders

Grinders and sanders

Grinders and sanders cover angle grinders, orbital and belt sanders, rotary multi-tools and the discs and abrasives that go with them. The range suits home DIY, tradespeople and workshops, with leading brands including Bosch, Makita, KWB and Metabo.

How to choose a grinder or sander

Tool type. Angle grinders cut and grind metal, stone and tile, while sanders smooth wood, paint and filler. A random orbital sander leaves a fine finish on furniture, a belt sander removes a lot of material quickly from flat boards, and a detail or delta sander reaches corners.

Corded or cordless. Corded tools give constant power for long grinding or sanding sessions. Cordless models are easier to carry around a building site or up a ladder, but they depend on battery capacity, so check the voltage and whether you already own batteries from the same maker. Both kinds are available in our range.

Disc size and motor power. Angle grinders mostly come in 115 mm and 125 mm sizes for light and general work, and 230 mm for heavy cutting and grinding. A larger disc needs a stronger motor and a firmer grip, so choose the smallest size that does your regular jobs. Variable speed is useful if you switch between metal, stone and polishing.

Dust extraction and comfort. Sanding creates a lot of fine dust, so look for a dust port or a built-in bag, and a connection to a workshop vacuum if you sand often. A side handle, a soft grip and low vibration matter when you use the tool for an hour or more.

Abrasives and accessories. Discs, flap discs and sanding sheets wear out much faster than the tool, so check what fits before you buy. Hook-and-loop pads make changing sheets quick, and the grit you choose decides whether you strip material or finish a surface.

  • 3M and Klingspor: two abrasives specialists, known for sanding discs, sheets and grinding wheels.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an angle grinder and a sander?

An angle grinder spins a hard disc at high speed to cut, grind or remove rust from metal and stone. A sander uses abrasive paper to smooth surfaces such as wood, paint or filler. Some grinders accept sanding pads, but a dedicated sander gives a more even finish on wood.

What size angle grinder do I need?

A 125 mm angle grinder is the most common choice for general home and workshop jobs. Choose 115 mm for lighter, more controlled work and 230 mm for thick metal or masonry. Larger discs are heavier and need a stronger motor, so they are less comfortable for occasional use.

Is a cordless grinder or sander powerful enough?

Modern cordless models handle most household and many professional jobs, particularly with a higher-capacity battery. Corded tools still suit continuous heavy work, because they do not lose power as a battery drains. If you already own batteries from Makita, Bosch, DeWalt or Einhell, a bare tool without battery can be the simpler way to extend your set.

Which sander is best for furniture?

A random orbital sander is the usual choice for furniture, because it removes material steadily without leaving obvious swirl marks. A detail or delta sander helps with corners and narrow edges. Start with a coarse grit to level the surface, then move to finer grits for a smooth finish before staining or painting.
