Cable tools and testers cover hand tools for stripping, cutting, crimping and punching down cables, plus testers that check network and data cabling. They suit electricians, network installers and IT technicians. Our range of over 50 products includes KNIPEX, LOGILINK, LANBERG and DIGITUS.
How to choose cable tools and testers
Cable type. Decide first whether you work with network cable (twisted pair with RJ45 or RJ11 connectors), coaxial cable or mains-voltage electrical cable. A tool made for one type often cuts poorly or damages another, so check the compatibility list before you buy.
Tool function. A stripper removes insulation without nicking the conductor, a crimper fixes connectors to the cable end, and a punch-down tool seats wires into patch panels and keystone jacks. Many network installers need all three, and some tools combine two functions in one body.
Connector and category support. Crimping tools are made for specific connector types, such as unshielded or shielded RJ45 plugs. If you terminate Cat5e, Cat6 or Cat6A cable, check that the tool matches both the plug size and the cable thickness, as thicker cable with thicker conductors needs the right plug design.
Level of testing. A basic tester checks continuity and the wiring order, so it finds broken wires, shorts and crossed pairs. It does not measure speed or signal quality. If you only need to confirm that a freshly crimped patch lead is wired correctly, a simple tester is enough.
Build quality and handling. For daily work, look at handle shape, grip material and how well the blades are hardened. A tool that fits your hand and has replaceable blades saves time and avoids rework.

Frequently asked questions about cable tools and testers
What tool do I need to crimp an RJ45 connector?
You need an RJ45 crimping tool, usually combined with a built-in cutter and stripper. Strip the outer jacket, arrange the pairs in the correct order, push them into the plug and squeeze the crimper. Check that the tool supports your plug type, for example shielded or pass-through.
What does a network cable tester do?
A network cable tester checks that each wire in a cable is connected to the right pin at both ends. It normally reports open circuits, shorts and crossed or split pairs. Basic models do not measure data speed or interference.
Do I need a cable tester if my network already works?
A tester is not essential for a network that already works, but it is useful when you make your own cables or install new wall sockets. It shows quickly whether a fault is in the cable or elsewhere in the network. This saves time compared with replacing parts at random.
What is the difference between a cable tester and a punch-down tool?
A cable tester checks a finished connection, while a punch-down tool is used to make one. The punch-down tool presses wires into the contacts of a patch panel or keystone jack and trims the excess. Most installers use the punch-down tool first, then verify the result with a tester.
