Measuring tools

Measuring tools

Measuring tools in our range include laser distance measurers, line lasers and levels, multimeters, clamp meters, thermometers, hygrometers and precision hand instruments. They suit electricians, builders, heating and ventilation technicians and serious DIY users. Leading brands include Extech, EMKO, Bosch and Laserliner.

How to choose a measuring tool

Quantity to measure. Start with the task: distance, level and alignment, voltage and current, temperature and humidity, or small dimensions. A laser distance measurer cannot replace a multimeter, and a thermometer will not tell you whether a wall is plumb. Shortlist by task first, because many brands concentrate on one or two of these areas.

Accuracy and range. Compare the stated accuracy, resolution and maximum range together rather than one figure alone. A long range matters on large sites and in big rooms, while indoor fitting rarely needs it. For callipers and other precision instruments, fine resolution is what lets you read small differences between parts.

Electrical safety rating. Multimeters and clamp meters carry a CAT rating (CAT II to CAT IV) that shows which part of an electrical installation they are designed for. CAT III is the usual minimum for work on distribution boards, and CAT IV applies to the point where the supply enters a building. A true RMS meter gives more trustworthy readings on loads that are not a clean sine wave.

Build and power. Site tools benefit from dust and water protection (an IP rating), a rubberised housing and easy battery access. For line lasers, a green beam is generally easier to see in bright rooms than a red one, though it usually uses more battery.

Professional or occasional use. Tradespeople who need documented results may want an instrument that can be calibrated and supplied with a certificate. For occasional jobs around the house, a simpler laser measurer or level with a clear display is usually enough. Some tools from cordless brands run on the same battery packs as their drills, which is worth checking if you already own one.

Measuring tool brands we carry

  • Extech: known for handheld test and measurement instruments such as multimeters, clamp meters and moisture meters.
  • EMKO: a Turkish manufacturer of industrial electronics, including temperature controllers and panel instruments.
  • Bosch: its Professional (blue) line covers laser distance measurers, rotary lasers and line lasers for building work.
  • Laserliner: a German specialist in laser, levelling and detection tools, with a focus on trades such as building and electrical installation.
  • TFA Dostmann: a German maker of thermometers, hygrometers and weather stations, widely used for room and climate monitoring.
  • DeWalt, Makita and Einhell: power tool brands that add lasers and levels to their cordless ecosystems.
  • Stanley: best known for tape measures, spirit levels and other hand measuring tools.
  • Tesa: a Swiss name in precision workshop instruments such as callipers, micrometers and height gauges.

Also in our range: Honeywell and Black+Decker.

Measuring tools: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a multimeter and a clamp meter?

A multimeter measures voltage, resistance and current through test leads, while a clamp meter measures current by closing around a single conductor. The clamp method means you do not have to break the circuit. Many clamp meters also measure voltage and resistance, so the two overlap.

How accurate is a laser distance measurer?

Most handheld laser distance measurers are accurate to within a few millimetres over typical room distances. The exact figure is given in the manufacturer's specification and can worsen at the far end of the range or in bright sunlight. For fitting kitchens or ordering flooring, that level of accuracy is normally sufficient.

Should I choose a green or a red line laser?

A green line laser is the better choice if you work in bright rooms, because the human eye sees green more easily than red. Red lasers are usually cheaper and use less battery, and they work well in dim or shaded spaces. Outdoors, either colour may need a detector to be visible.

How often should measuring instruments be calibrated?

Many professionals calibrate instruments once a year, though the right interval depends on the tool, how heavily it is used and any standards you must meet. Electrical test equipment and precision gauges are the usual candidates. Check the manufacturer's recommendation, and recalibrate sooner if a tool has been dropped or gives readings that look wrong.
