Tool cases and bags

Tool cases and bags

Tool cases and bags for power tools, hand tools and fixings: stackable hard cases, technician cases, soft bags and plastic storage boxes. The range suits tradespeople, installers and home DIYers, with brands such as Bosch, Makita, DeWalt, Stanley and Allit among more than 500 models.

How to choose a tool case or bag

Hard case or soft bag. A hard case protects drills, saws and measuring instruments from knocks, dust and splashes, and most can be stacked in a van. A soft bag is lighter, folds flat when empty and has outer pockets for hand tools, so it suits electricians and maintenance staff who walk between jobs.

System compatibility. Many manufacturers build cases that clip together, so a stack of several cases travels as one unit on a trolley. Mixing brands usually works only if the latches and footprints match, so check whether you are buying into one system such as L-BOXX, MakPac, MetaLoc or T-STAK before you add a second case.

Size and internal layout. Measure the longest tool you need to store, then add room for the battery, charger and accessories. Cases with a fitted foam insert hold one tool securely, while those with dividers, trays or removable inserts suit mixed kits of bits, screws and hand tools.

Build quality and carrying comfort. Check the latches, hinges and handle, since they take the most wear. Metal or reinforced latches and a padded or wide handle matter if you carry a loaded case up stairs or across a site every day. A seal around the lid helps if the case is used outdoors.

Empty case or filled set. Some cases are sold empty, others arrive with tools or assortments already inside, such as pliers sets. An empty case lets you build a kit around your own tools, while a filled one saves time if you need the tools anyway.

Tool cases and bags: frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a tool case and a tool bag?

A tool case has a rigid shell that protects the contents from impact, water and dust, while a tool bag is made of fabric and is lighter to carry. Cases suit power tools and precision equipment. Bags suit hand tools that you need to reach quickly, thanks to open tops and outer pockets.

Can I mix cases from different brands?

Sometimes, but not reliably. Each manufacturer designs its own latching and footprint, so cases from the same system lock together securely, while cases from different systems may only stack loosely. Check the latch type and base shape before you plan to carry them as one stack.

How do I know which size of case I need?

Measure your longest tool, including any attached battery or handle, and choose a case with some spare room inside. If the tool has a fitted insert, pick a case made for that model. For a mixed kit, look at the internal height and the number of trays or dividers.

Are plastic cases suitable for site work?

Yes, most plastic cases are made for site use and resist knocks, dust and splashes. Look for sturdy latches, a reinforced handle and a lid seal if the case will be outdoors often. Heavy loads put the most strain on the handle and hinges, so choose a model rated for the weight you plan to carry.
