How to choose ceiling and wall lights
Brightness and room size. Check the lumen rating rather than the wattage, because LED wattage says little about light output. Kitchens, home offices and bathrooms need more light than bedrooms, and a large room often needs several fittings rather than one strong one.
Colour temperature. Warm white suits lounges and bedrooms, while neutral or cool white works better for kitchens, workspaces and garages. Many smart models let you shift between warm and cool white, which saves you from committing to one tone.
Smart control and compatibility. Decide first which system you already use: Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Bluetooth or an app such as Mi Home or Philips Hue. Zigbee lights usually need a hub or bridge, while Wi-Fi models connect straight to your router. If you use Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, confirm the light is listed as compatible before buying.
Mounting and location. Check whether the fitting is designed for a ceiling, a wall or both, and whether it sits on the surface or is recessed. For bathrooms, covered patios or outdoor walls, look for a suitable IP protection rating. Measure the diameter and depth too, especially in rooms with low ceilings.
Dimming. Dimmable lights are useful in living rooms and bedrooms. Smart models usually dim through the app or remote, while ordinary dimmable LEDs may need a compatible wall dimmer.

Frequently asked questions about ceiling and wall lights
How many lumens do I need for a room?
It depends on the room size and its use, so add up the lumens of all fittings in the room. A bedroom is comfortable with less light than a kitchen or home office. If you are unsure, choose a dimmable or smart light so you can lower the brightness when it is too much.
Do smart ceiling lights need a hub?
Not always. Wi-Fi models usually connect directly to your router and work through an app, while Zigbee models, such as many in the Philips Hue range, generally need a hub or bridge. Check the product specification for the connection type before you buy.
Can I install a ceiling or wall light myself?
Swapping a fitting is simple for some people, but fixed wiring should be handled by a qualified electrician. In South Africa, electrical work usually also needs a certificate of compliance. Always switch off the circuit at the distribution board before touching any wiring.
Should I choose warm white or cool white?
