Flashlights and headlamps in our range include handheld torches, rechargeable tactical lights, work lights and hands-free headlamps for running, climbing and workshop jobs. Leading brands are NITECORE, ANSMANN, LEDLENSER and PETZL, alongside tool makers such as DEWALT and MAKITA. With over 150 models, you can pick anything from a pocket light to a site torch.
How to choose a flashlight or headlamp
Handheld or headlamp. A handheld torch gives a tighter, longer beam and is easier to aim at a distant object. A headlamp keeps both hands free, which matters for climbing, camping, running, car repairs and work in tight spaces.
Brightness and beam. Lumens show total light output, but beam distance and spot-to-flood pattern decide how useful the light is. A few hundred lumens is enough for most walking and household tasks, while search and tactical use calls for much higher output. Check that the light also has a low mode, because a very bright beam at close range is uncomfortable and wastes battery.
Battery and charging. Many lights in our range are rechargeable, either through a built-in battery with a USB charging port or through removable lithium-ion cells. Removable cells let you carry a spare, while built-in batteries keep the body simpler and slimmer. Lights that use standard AA or AAA batteries remain useful as an emergency backup, since you can buy replacements almost anywhere.
Runtime and modes. Manufacturers usually quote runtime for the lowest setting, so look at the figure for medium output too. Useful extras include a red light mode for preserving night vision, a strobe or SOS signal, and a lock-out function that stops the light switching on in a bag.
Weather and impact resistance. An IPX rating shows how well the light copes with water: IPX4 handles splashes, while IPX8 means it can be submerged. For outdoor and work use, also look for a drop-resistance rating and a sturdy aluminium body.

Flashlights and headlamps: frequently asked questions
How many lumens do I need in a flashlight?
For household use, camping and evening walks, 200 to 500 lumens is usually enough. Higher output of 1000 lumens or more is useful for lighting up distant objects, search tasks and large outdoor areas. Beam shape and runtime matter as much as the headline figure.
Is a headlamp better than a flashlight?
A headlamp is better when you need both hands free, for example when hiking, running, fixing a car or working in a loft. A flashlight is better when you need a longer, more focused beam or want to pass the light between people. Many people keep one of each.
What does an IPX rating mean on a torch?
An IPX rating tells you how well a torch resists water. IPX4 means it survives splashes and rain, while IPX7 and IPX8 mean it can be submerged for a time. The number only covers water, so dust and drop resistance are rated separately.
Are rechargeable flashlights better than battery-powered ones?
Rechargeable flashlights are cheaper to run if you use them often, and most can be topped up over USB. Models with standard AA or AAA batteries are easier to refuel when you have no access to power, such as on a long trip. For emergency kits, many buyers choose a rechargeable main light and keep a battery-powered backup.
