How to choose a work light or floodlight
Brightness. Lumens show how much light a lamp produces, while watts only show how much power it draws. A few hundred lumens is enough for close work such as engine bays or cabinet interiors, but a yard, drive or building site usually needs several thousand. Also check the beam: a wide beam covers an area, a narrow one throws light further.
Power source. Mains lights give constant output and suit fixed positions near a socket, though cable length matters. Rechargeable lights can be moved freely, but runtime falls at full brightness, so check the stated hours. Some tool makers build lights around their own battery platform, which helps if you already own the batteries.
Protection rating. An IP rating shows resistance to dust and water. For outdoor use or a damp workshop, look for at least IP44 (protected against splashes), and IP65 or higher if the light will face heavy rain or be hosed down. On building sites, impact resistance matters too.
Mounting and stand. A tripod or telescopic stand lifts the light above your work and reduces shadows. A hook, magnet or bracket frees your hands when working under a vehicle or in a ceiling void. Fixed floodlights go on a wall or post, so look for an adjustable bracket.
Colour temperature and sensors. Neutral white light of around 4000 K to 5000 K shows detail and colour more accurately for painting or inspection. Warmer light is gentler in gardens and entrances. A motion sensor switches a floodlight on only when needed, which suits security lighting.
