Smart locks & access control

Smart locks & access control

Smart locks and access control in our range cover retrofit door locks, fingerprint and keypad locks, access control terminals and the relays and controllers that connect them. They suit homeowners, tenants and small offices that want keyless entry. Brands include QOLTEC, DAHUA, AVATTO, eQ-3, Aqara and NUKI.

How to choose a smart lock or access control system

Retrofit or full replacement. A retrofit lock fits over the inside of your existing cylinder, so the door stays untouched and the old key still works. This is the easiest route for renters. A full replacement lock or a terminal beside the door gives more built-in unlocking methods but needs drilling and a closer match to your door.

Ways to unlock. Fingerprint, PIN code, RFID card, phone app and mechanical key are all found in our range, often combined in one device. A keypad or fingerprint reader is useful for children, cleaners and guests who should not need a phone. Always keep a mechanical key as a fallback.

Connectivity. Bluetooth-only locks work when you are near the door. For remote unlocking, activity logs and alerts, you need Wi-Fi or a bridge. Zigbee and Matter devices connect to a hub, which suits anyone building a wider smart home with lights and sensors.

Power and backup. Most smart locks run on batteries, and battery life varies with how often the door is used and how the lock connects. Look for low-battery warnings and a way to power the lock in an emergency, such as a USB connection or a key override.

Door and cylinder compatibility. Check your cylinder type, door thickness and whether the thumb turn can be fitted over. A lock that does not match your door will not work properly, so compare the fitting requirements before ordering.

Smart locks and access control FAQ

Do smart locks work without internet?

Most smart locks still unlock without internet, because keypads, fingerprint readers, cards and Bluetooth work locally. Internet access, usually through Wi-Fi or a bridge, is only needed for remote unlocking, notifications and sharing access while you are away.

Can I fit a smart lock to my existing door?

Often yes, if you choose a retrofit model that mounts over your existing cylinder. You need to check the cylinder type, door thickness and thumb turn shape first. Locks that replace the whole mechanism need a closer match to the door.

What happens if the smart lock battery runs out?

You can normally still open the door with a mechanical key or an emergency power connection, depending on the model. Most locks warn you through an app or indicator before the batteries are empty. Replace them as soon as the warning appears.

What is the difference between a smart lock and an access control system?

A smart lock is a single device that controls one door, usually for a household. An access control system links readers, controllers and software to manage many users and doors, with schedules and entry logs. Offices and shared buildings generally need the second type.
