Smart house

Smart house

Smart house products let you control lighting, power, heating, security and door access from a phone or a central hub. Our range of over 4,000 products covers sensors and detectors, smart plugs and switches, lighting, alarm systems and smart locks from brands such as Shelly, ABUS, eQ-3 and Aqara. It suits renters adding a single plug as well as owners equipping a whole house.

How to choose smart house devices

Ecosystem and protocol. Devices talk to each other over Wi-Fi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Bluetooth or proprietary radio, and Matter is a newer standard meant to link brands. Pick one main system first and check that every new device supports it, otherwise you end up running several apps.

Hub or no hub. Wi-Fi devices such as many plugs and relays work straight from your router. Zigbee and similar systems need a hub or gateway, but they usually react faster and keep large numbers of battery sensors off your Wi-Fi network.

Installation. Plug-in devices need no tools, while in-wall switches, relays and dimmers sit behind existing switches and often need a neutral wire. Work on fixed mains wiring should be done by a registered electrician.

Security and power cuts. For alarms, locks and door stations, look for battery backup and encrypted wireless communication. With load shedding in mind, check what keeps working when the router is off: some systems run locally through the hub, others depend on a cloud service.

Room to grow. Start with one area, such as a plug, a motion sensor and a few lights, and add door sensors, heating control or an alarm later. Choosing a system with many compatible accessories saves replacing everything down the line.

Smart house brands we carry

  • Shelly: known for compact Wi-Fi relays and dimmers that fit behind standard wall switches, so existing switches keep working.
  • ABUS: German security manufacturer with a long history in locks, alarm systems and door protection.
  • eQ-3: the company behind the Homematic IP system for heating control, switching and window sensors.
  • Steinel: German maker of sensor lights and presence and motion detectors.
  • Master Lock: long-established padlock and lock box brand, including keyless and Bluetooth models.
  • Siedle: specialist in door intercom and video door station systems.
  • Somfy: motorised drives for blinds, shutters, awnings and gates, with its own control system.
  • Aqara: Zigbee-based sensors, switches and hubs, with support for major smart home platforms.
  • Ajax: wireless alarm systems built around a central hub and a range of detectors.
  • Philips: Hue smart lighting, with bulbs, strips and luminaires that work through a bridge.

Also in our range: Sygonix and M-E Modern-Electronics.

Beyond sensors and detectors, plugs, switches and lighting, you will find thermostats and heating control, hubs and gateways, doorbells and intercoms, smart security cameras, and mounts and accessories.

Smart house FAQ

Do I need a hub for a smart home?

Not always. Wi-Fi plugs, bulbs and relays connect directly to your router and are managed by an app. A hub becomes useful once you add many sensors, locks or heating devices, because it connects them over Zigbee or a similar protocol and can run automations locally.

Which smart devices should I buy first?

Smart plugs and smart lighting are the easiest starting point, as they need no wiring and show results immediately. A motion sensor or door sensor is a sensible second step, since it lets lights and alarms react automatically.

Do smart home devices work without internet?

It depends on the system. Devices linked through a local hub can usually keep running automations when the internet is down, while cloud-based Wi-Fi devices may lose remote control. Check whether a product offers local control before buying.

Can I install smart switches myself?

Plug-in devices, bulbs and battery sensors are simple to set up yourself. Smart switches and relays that connect to fixed mains wiring should be fitted by a registered electrician, and many require a neutral wire in the wall box.
